An X-Ray Analysis of Radiology! [Exclusive Interview]

April 18, 20189 min read

Founded in 2015, the duo Radiology kickstarted their career by winning Hardwell’s “#MadeWithHardwell” remix competition for his amazing track “Mad World” featuring Jake Reese. Duo members Marko Vampovac & Dominik Vukić, both born and raised in the small town of Virovitica, Croatia, have revolutionized the EDM Scene of the nation. They’re now signed to the biggest labels in the scene including Spinnin’ Records, Dharma Worldwide & Revealed Recordings.

Radiology’s support list boasts of top DJs like Hardwell, Tiesto, Martin Garrix, KSHMR, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and many others! Their tracks have been played on mainstages all around the world, from Tomorrowland to Ultra Music Festival and yet their career is just starting off!

Radiology

Well known for their progressive house style, their latest release on Dharma Worldwide – Phobia is a corroboration of the fact that they’re not afraid of experimentation and can deliver top-notch electro house too. Read our review of “Phobia” here.

We were fortunate to get a chance to interview them and we learned a lot about their style, their reasons behind experimentations and about their curious name.

We hope this interview brings Radiology a little closer to you.

1. “Radiology” is a curious stage name. Why did you pick such a “medical” term for your career, and, in general, why and how did you start making music?

When we first met each other, we tried to make one track. We both decided to go for progressive because our favourite genre was progressive. The track was titled “Electron”, and immediately got supported by Yves V in his V sessions.
So we decided to start a duo. We didn’t know which name would suit us the best. We wanted it to be as catchy as possible and, obviously unique. Dominik was studying radiologic technologies so we wanted to implement that cool name in our duo name.
We thought of Raveology, but unfortunately, the name was taken by DVBBS and their track of the same name. So we decided to stick with Radiology.

2. In a super quick summary of your initial career, you won the Hardwell’s “Mad World” remix contest and then had various releases on his label Revealed. Needless to say that all of them were fantastic but now there is another new step: a release on Dharma (KSHMR’s label). Can you talk about this particular song, “Phobia”?

Yeah, we figured out that we won’t get any club gigs only with progressive tracks so we decided to try with something else, something equally powerful at clubs and at festivals. And the most important reason is that we wanted to try something different, mostly for two of us, because it was a whole new experience for us. Our philosophy is that we want to become complete producers, which means that we don’t wish to focus only on one genre and try to conquer it, we want to experiment with various styles with a goal of learning new things and then trying to combine them to get something unique, also because it is super fun and challenging.

“Phobia” is first one on the list of those “experiments” we are talking about. The track is doing really great in the first few days after its release. We are extremely grateful to boss KSHMR who took it and gave us the opportunity to release it on his label, for his support and everything he and his team did for us. It really is a big honor for both of us.

3. Despite “Phobia” being electro house, your style is mainly a sweet yet energetic progressive house one. It’s hard to describe in few words, but that magical mood is a signature Radiology element in every song or remix. What’s the secret of this style?

Yeah, that is our primary style and will always be. Simply because only we can accomplish that euphoric vibe when you feel like you can move mountains with this style. It’s emotional, super fun to work on and works great with vocals, so we made a lot of good vocalist friends by collaborating on various tracks together. For us, it’s the most complex and best genre right now on the EDM scene, because we value catchy melodies the most.

Unfortunately, progressive tracks are extremely hard to get signed these days, so that was one of the reasons for switching our style for “Phobia” and for the next few releases. The secret is our way of production. We are extremely petty about every last detail, even those that can’t hear clearly because it is there ‘just to fill the spectrum’. We both are heavily inspired by early 2000’s melodic techno and hands up styles… So probably that plays a role in our choice of sounds, our arrangement for the track and our style altogether.

4. 2018 is the year of progressive, as many people are declaring it to be. What do you think about the same?

We don’t think that’s the case.
As we already said, progressive is really hard to get signed as far as we are familiar with the whole situation. We saw people commenting like: “Wt* is this, get back to progressive” and stuff. But people don’t understand that we can’t only make progressive, because of our obvious situation. Every new “progressive” track we saw was released, was either too “commercial” (soft, without energy, with weak buildups which we consider the most important part for getting a big impact on drops), or too close to all the now-popular radio styles. And that’s not the artist’s fault, labels are giving us those directions. So we (progressive producers generally) don’t have many choices.

5. What’s your favorite song at the moment, and why?

Butterfly by Andrew Belize & Adaptiv. Great track, with a great idea and especially catchy vocals by Menno. We really love Andrew’s style and hopefully, we would come up with something together really soon. The melody really gives you goosebumps and lifts you up. This is a perfect example of we are talking about, the real progressive power, a combination of great vocals, chords, and melody, combined together with nice production will take you to a wonderland! Definitely a 90/100!

6. In our opinion, Radiology is extremely underrated, despite having quite a big name in the progressive scene. What’s your most important release, at the moment?

Unfortunately for our progressive fans, “Phobia” now is our most recognizable track at the moment. Yeah, we are aware of that, but we are ignoring that and are working 24/7 to deliver new and fresh originals and remixes. We hope someone would give us a real and bigger opportunity, so we can show what we can do to the crowd with our combination of various genres and different tempo changes through our live set.
