Ravitez – Young, Energetic & Experimental [Exclusive Interview]

April 9, 20186 min read

25-year-old DJ/Producer Chico Martinez de Reus, also known as Ravitez, is living the dream he saw as a little kid in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Up till now, Ravitez has been receiving industry support from titans such as Thomas Gold, Sick Individuals, Nicky Romero and Afrojack. The list only gets bigger and better and now for Ravitez, the only way is up.

In 2014, his very first single on Vato Gonzalez’ label Dirty House Records made it to the Beatport Top 100. His hard work and perseverance paid off big time when he released 2 tracks on Nicky Romero’s “Protocol Recordings”. After that, bigger DJs in the scene started recognizing Ravitez’s talent.

None other than the platinum-selling producer, Afrojack recognized his talent and soon it came to the point where he decided to get Ravitez aboard his team which gave him the opportunity and the privilege to share the stage with some of the biggest names in the scene.

After joining Afrojack’s Wall Family, they teamed up in the studio and created “System” together with MC Ambush. They teamed up again for “The Great Escape” featuring Amba Shepherd which we consider was his biggest break. Ravitez’ career has really taken off with him joining Afrojack on tour and playing at major festivals like Ultra Music Festival (Miami), Tomorrowland (Belgium), EDC (Las Vegas) and Untold Festival (Romania). We were fortunate to get a chance to interview him and we learned a lot about his style, his stage name, his early influences and his plans for the future.

We hope you enjoy reading this interview, and thanks to Ravitez for his time!

Ravitez

Recently, Ravitez has once again teamed up with Afrojack to create a masterful, big room, hard-hitting DJ tool, 2012. The pair has delivered this hard-hitting banger just in time for spring. The perfect homage to some classics of 2012, Ravitez challenges a nostalgic journey through sweet musical memories. With Ravitez’s emotive melodies accompanied by Afrojack’s signature bass injection, 2012 will surely infuse you with a dose of high-octane confidence. It’s difficult not to love this reminiscent exploration. Read our review of “2012” here:

“Ravitez”, what a curious stage name! Can you please tell us more about it and the beginning of your career? Why did you decide to produce music, and why did you pick this name?

In 2010 my dad gave me my first DJ set. I fell in love with playing music. 1 year later I started making my own music on FL Studio. Not long after I had my first single to release and I needed an artist name. My second name is Martinez and my last name is Reus. It is a combination of the 2.

After two great releases on Protocol, the world finally recognized your talent, thanks to Afrojack and Wall Recordings. Most of your hits have been released there, making you one of the most appreciated artists on the roster. How does it feel to be part of that special family?

The moment I met Afrojack for the first time, it felt unreal. I always looked up to him and I still do! Wall Recordings is a great label with lots of awesome music. It feels really special to be a part of this Wall Family. We do a lot of things together and we are really close friends. The best part is that it’s not confined to just music.

Your style is extremely interesting. During these years you experimented with various genres, while still maintaining the energetic imprint, unpredictability and “frenetic” melodies. How could you describe to a stranger the “Ravitez style”?

I always try to do interesting things with my music. Melodies, chords or drums. It is the best feeling when you’re in the studio and you make something that works in the clubs and festivals. I think I can describe my music as energetic and happy.

Speaking about “frenetic melodies”, your latest hit “2012” with Afrojack amazed us. We said, in the review, that the song is a tribute to 2012 sounds, but, for the cover and the dark vibes, it also reminds us of the “2012” movie about the world’s end. Can you tell us more about this explosive collab?

Afrojack and I sat in the studio talking about next projects and we were like, we need a new festival banger. So I started off this idea with the melody and we finished the track in the next few days. We used recognizable sounds that we really like. The cover came later because the song gives you that “end of the world” vibe. In the end, it all blended together.
