86/100

With quality and proficient releases every week, Dutch label Strange Fruits continues to impress and garner fans. This time, we have a very alluring and peppy production from the Canadian prodigy Midsplit, who teamed up with talented singer Casey Cook. They paired up before for a delectable pop tune named “Either Way”. This second imposing collaboration has been titled “Dawn”, which is an engaging and vibrant future bass song.

Midsplit isn’t an unfamiliar name in the genre of electronic dance. He also owns the
renowned imprint of “Illicit”, which focuses distinctively on chill-trap and other subtle and sublime genres of the dance music. Also making an official remix for the eminent “Cheat Codes” and “Nicky Romero”, this young musician scored a gargantuan collaboration a couple of months back with the illustrious rapper “Wiz Khalifa” (which was also released on Strange Fruits).

“Dawn” is an enchanting song which doesn’t shy away from creativity and genuineness. Add to that the ensnaring vocal from Casey Cook and we have a perfect little mix. Initiating in a grandiose way, the breakdown showcases the vocal which asserts its dominance over the complementing elements, playing out in the backdrop. Organically and gradually escalating, the breakdown smoothly transitions to the intense and melodic drop. The drop sways in with
powerful future bass saws, while a pitched sonorous vocal snippet plays along. This unique combination of synths and unusual yet fresh vocal element embeds an unexpected energy and ardour in the drop. That’s why we gave a high rating: future bass producers, please learn how to make INTERESTING vocal chops from “Dawn”. Chapeau.

Without doubt, Midsplit has properly crafted something special in his lab. “Dawn” is a definite must listen, as it delivers a beautiful and refreshing vibe unfailingly! The break is magical and relaxing, the drop presents a fantastic dynamism… We rarely review future bass, but when we do, it’s because it’s something special.
