Raise Your Hands And Drop Your Guns For Dropgun! [Exclusive Interview]

April 27, 201811 min read

This interview has been made in collaboration with The QR Network

Dropgun, the Russian Duo based in Tomsk, started in 2013 when duo members Mike Martinov & Ilyas Kozhahanov met on a website for producers. They stormed the scene with their incredible talent that was imminent in their early 2014 releases on DOORN (Hayao with Ralvero), Oxygen (Amsterdam) & Metanoia (Angst). However, they skyrocketed as one of the best producers in the scene in late 2014 with “Pyramids”, their collab with DVBBS, released on Spinnin’ Records. The track topped the Beatport charts and has recorded over 30 million plays worldwide! Their support list brags of artists like Hardwell, Martin Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Tiesto, David Guetta, Bassjackers and many more supporting their tracks on their festival sets as well as podcasts!

Throughout 2018, this duo kept on surprising us, switching from a brutal electro house style to something really difficult to explain.

Every Dropgun release is a surprise.

Electro House, Future House, Psy-Trance, Future Bass, Big Room. You name it and they have it! Most of Dropgun releases, however, have one thing in common, brutal and powerful drops that test the limits of your subwoofers, justifying their name “Drop-gun”!

In this interview, Dropgun reveal some interesting facts about “Little Drop”, the official mascot of the group. This cute purple character has his own story, narrated through various Spinnin’ Releases. We don’t want to spoil it and ruin the surprise for you, so we would just suggest checking out the music videos for “Little Drop” and “Krishna” to discover more about this new and funny little addition to the Dropgun family.

Dropgun’s latest release was the summery “Next To Me” with Aspyer, released on Musical Freedom. Perfectly fusing together pop sensibilities with the edginess of future bass, “Next To Me” has that staying power that Dropgun boast and is sure to score highly amongst critics, DJs and fans alike. Its cool, minimal guitars, dramatic drop and captivating vocals from Romy Dya guarantees this track as a summer anthem. Read our review of “Next To Me” here.

We had the chance to speak with Dropgun for an official interview and thus we are proud to present this exclusive. Read to know about their initial phases, their musical styles, their recent tour experience and their plans for the future!

Dropgun

Could you tell us about how was Dropgun formed and how you all work together in the studio?

We all started out as solo artists until we met each other on a website for music producers. We had many things in common like our taste in music and our dreams of making it big in the Electronic Music scene. So, we exchanged ideas every day and helped each other write out new songs. In 2014, we decided to create “Dropgun” and immediately got to work on our new tracks. To maximize our time in the studio, we try to write out the basic melodies and create the sounds we might need and when we get there, we’re mostly working on translating our ideas into reality.

Tell us more about the men behind the music. What do you guys enjoy doing when you’re not on the road or in the studio?

We almost always devote ourselves to music. After we get finished in the studio, we like to go sit in a restaurant and talk about new releases and plans for the future. Mike loves playing and watching football, and Ilyas likes to play old Sega games in his spare time.

The official music videos for “Little Drop” and “Krishna” feature an adorable little character created by you all and Doodle bro & Velter Unfurl. Could you tell us more about the character’s creation and where you hope to take him next?

That came from a long time of brainstorming on how we could diversify our social media accounts. We came up with a lot of ideas but our favorite was to add a new member to our team! Our graphic designer is very fond of space characters so we decided to come up with a story related to the cosmos and its inhabitants; thus our newest team member was born. In the future, we plan to develop “Little Drop” and make more music videos with him. Maybe in the future, he’ll find a special girl and create a whole Little Drop Family!

You finished your tour in Japan at the end of February. How did it go and what did you all get up to over there?

We had an amazing time over there! We were really surprised to find out just how many Japanese fans we had! Each club had an unforgettable atmosphere and we were especially surprised when the audience sang along to many of our tracks. Outside of the clubs, we become really fond of the Japanese cuisine, but we were particularly drawn the sushi. We’ve tried this dish many times in Russia but Japanese sushi is truly something incredible.

The tracks you’ve released so far have covered a pretty wide spectrum of genres including Future House, Midtempo, Future Bass, Electro House, and some Big Room back in the day. What is your process for creating new tracks?

We get most of our inspiration from the music we listen to in our own time. We listen to a lot of old music as well as Nu Disco, Drum & Bass, and Dubstep. One genre in particular we like is Hardstyle because of its strong melodies and crazy harmonies. When we sit down to create new tracks, we try and incorporate and expand upon the elements that we liked from other tracks and build a song around it.

Now that you’ve had releases on Revealed Recordings, Skink, Armada, Dharma Worldwide, Hexagon, Enhanced Music, Monstercat, and Spinnin’ Records, how would you say your process for releasing tracks has changed?

The process of sending tracks to labels hasn’t really changed compared to previous years. If a producer or group has a good track, then the label is sure to be interested. At least that’s been the case in our experience and we’re really happy that the sound quality of our tracks has improved every year which is why we think we’ve gotten more record deals. Right now, we have about six tracks of various genres just waiting to be released. We’ve been impatiently waiting for them to come out and share them with you and get your opinions on them!

More than four years after you released “Pyramids,” which can easily be considered one of EDM’s most famous tracks, you guys are still evolving and making waves with every release. Where do you hope to go from here and what are you looking to accomplish next?

We plan on continuing to please our fans with every new release we have and we hope to receive the same level of support on them like we got on “Pyramids.” Right now, our main goal is to perform at the biggest Electronic Music festivals around the world and we’re ready to put in the work to make that happen. Not too long ago, we launched Dropgun Samples which is where people can buy some of our sounds but looking towards the future, we plan on launching our own music label where we can release music from some of the artists that have attracted our attention over the years. So be on the lookout for more news on that and all the exciting releases we have coming out for you all!
