Weekly Roundup XLI (with a 2x Ingrosso and more bonus reviews!)

July 28, 20227 min read

The final week of July hit us quite unexpectedly, and so did many artists. With Tomorrowland, Ibizan events, and other festivals in full effect, the music industry is pressing harder on the throttle with numerous mentionable songs out on a single Friday. Good for us, so let’s hop into the latest installment of the Weekly Roundup!

Above & Beyond – Projection
81/100

Just two months shy of nearly sold-out Group Therapy 500, the British trio is making sure that the upcoming milestone won’t be scarce of proper music. Anjunabeats volume 16 came out with a plethora of regular names delivering explosive efforts, including the label owners themselves.

Projection” stays true to the classic progressive trance fashion, donning the radiating and arpeggiating saw synths instructed to play hypnotic riffs, with robust offbeat basslines and sublime pads, cumulating to offer a euphoric breakdown to sweeten the deal!

AN21, HIISAK, Able Faces – Alright
83/100

Resuming his notable career back, Steve Angello’s brother AN21 broke his hiatus in the best way possible: Teaming up with HIISAK and duo Able Faces, the Swedish musician decided to opt for a more trending melodic techno signature instead of his usual Electro groove house trademark, which he did so with adeptness, denying being rusty on being inactive for nearly seven years.

“Alright” has a very CamelPhat/ARTBAT-esque sound, however not deniable of its moodier and broody atmosphere. Minimal to its cause, the suave vocal presence makes sure the instrumental remains catchier than ever!

Diplo, TSHA – Let You Go (ft. Kareen Lomax) (Sebastian Ingrosso & Desembra Remix) & Weeknd – How Do I Make You Love Me (Sebastian Ingrosso & Salvatore Ganacci Remix)
85/100

1/3rd of SHM, Sebastian Ingrosso remains not as present on his solo alias as much these days, owing to his commitment to the supergroup, but when he does release, it is nothing less of remarkable and proves his significance as a veteran producer.

Not one, but two different remixes came out involving the Swedish act. Firstly, an arresting melodic house rendition of Diplo & TSHAs‘ “Let You Go“) (featuring Kareen Lomax) alongside Desembra came out, which inventively makes application of groovy percussions and a somber aura, staying close to deep-tech house schematics.

Following this is a dynamic collaboration between the unmistakable Salvatore Ganacci, again on remix duty for RnB icon The Weeknd on his single “How Do I Make You Love Me“. Upping the heat on this one, the said duo approached a club-ready format, equipped with gritty aesthetics and playful drums that aid a rumbling low-end that is bound to decimate crowds!

MEDUZA – Bad Memories (ft. Elley Duhé & FAST BOY)
70/100

After several remixes, MEDUZA pulled the trigger and unveiled their flagship record for the summer. “Bad Memories“, which includes reputed vocalists Elley Duhe and FAST BOY, remains strictly to the deep house formula that the Italian ensemble developed, tried and tested.

The problem albeit remains in the fact that the group’s sound is no longer idiosyncratic and singular, contrary to that, it has been overused by various names. Hence the aforementioned single is somewhat like your comfort food- not straying far from the preferred “MEDUZA” sound and capturing the electronic-pop essence just about enough to top various commercial charts.

Headhunterz – Time To Dance Again
83/100

If the Hardstyle veteran says it’s time to hit the dancefloors, then well it is. His latest endeavor, which comes after a year of radio silence, is a chaos-inducing agent with aggressive characteristics.

Time To Dance Again” revolves around a narrative that festivals need to happen in full force, while a powerful bunch of melodic synths gather together with a pummeling kick drum to reinforce this point. As usual, the said producer proves his mettle with the genre of choice.

Note – Check the ‘Arena Mix’ version for an even more volatile and vigorous VIP version of the above song.

Zomboy, MUST DIE! – Last One Standing!
84/100

Wreckless and havoc-inducing synths run rampant on “Last One Standing!“, a creative joint effort shared between British act Zomboy and MUST DIE!, also including an anonymous female vocalist who does a lovely work of introducing mellow tonality in this track.

Expect no less intensity, with squelching and wobbly synths going against each other, only taken over by melodic riffs alternatively. The breakdown although resorts to a more atmospheric and cadent soundscape, only to distorted and strong-armed by the mentioned instruments later hand.

CHYL – Sweat
81/100

Sweat” gets straight to the point- making her meritorious return to the roundup once again, the Canadian DJ/producer CHYL dabbled with the Speed House genre.

Selecting faster pacing, the production reaches its apex with bass house condiments throughout, interjected by snappy one-shots and resonant bassline. To add to the fun, a teasing vocal accompanies the already fun-packed instrumental till the end, embedding more catchiness to the ongoing game. Another meticulous follow-up to “Ruthless”, which was released on Diverge Records last month.

R4MPAGE & MeviX – BitterSweet (Ft.Émilie Rachel)
80/100

Devising a melodic future bass song titled “Bittersweet“, Indian producer R4MPAGE and South Korea-based MeviX came upon an outcome that is not only fetching but discards the usual commercial practices in the genre for a more unique, stand-out sound.

Also inclusive of a commendable vocal presence from BBC Radio-supported Émilie Rachel, this record uses vocal chops in alignment with warped synths and knocking percussions to maintain both radio-friendliness and an indie dance record decorum
