The Future of EDM and Videogames

May 15, 20202 min read

Electronic music is everywhere, also in videogames, an entertainment media that most of the listeners are enjoying. When we think about EDM on videogames we usually think about original soundtracks but, especially during this period, it took another step with live virtual performances or events related with VR technology.

Fortnite, a game loved and hated, helped a lot in these things, young children discovered this genre thanks to Steve Aoki, Dillon Francis or deadmau5 who performed on a video played in the game. Also, we cannot forget about the enormous Marshmello performance full of lasers and colors.

While Fortnite helped the mainstream zone, Grand Theft Auto 5 (specifically, its online version) provided some techno and undergrounds performances thanks to an event called “After Hours”. The artists that appeared on these virtual sets was Solomun, Black Madonna, Tale of Us and Dixon. Mythical artists on the underground scene.

Talking about EDM and technology, W&W premiered their new virtual show on Li-Ning Arena, located in Rave Culture City. Of course, they created a whole virtual arena for this epic event that will be streamed on Twitch the May 23rd.

In addition, DJs helped a lot on videogames´ soundtracks or releasing their own videogames. Nicky Romero released a game called “Play Nicky” as a way to improve his votes on DJMag; Avicii released his game called “Invector, a rhythm game based on his music, and we cannot forget about the mythical DJ Hero, a videogame in collaboration with superstars like Fedde Le Grand.

I think that the EDM scene is constantly innovating and reinforcing its connection with the videogame world, and this was just an hadnful of examples. It’s beautiful how the two realities are connected!
