The Chainsmokers & Kygo – Family

December 11, 20193 min read

• Lost Frequencies vibes in the intro
• Excellent message, vocal and lyrics
• Relaxing and warm mood

Do you remember the “World War Joy… Push My Luck” cover? A total of four songs were redacted, a genial marketing choice that ultimately introduces us to the “deluxe” version of this successful EP. It includes promising collaborations, including one with renowned Blink-182, and the long-awaited production with Norweigan heavyweight Kygo, “Family“.

Kygo is an outstanding legend in the Tropical House barony, I’m sure some of his all-time hits are common knowledge among our readers. I’ve already spoken about the American duo multitude of times, declaring that the hatred towards them is quite unnecessary for me, and I underline this again. Their lyrics may be kitschy sometimes, and their pop is far from our usual tastes, however presenting itself as quality work nonetheless. I’ve been digging it quite a lot during the past weekend!

“Family” denies to be genuine, the base inclines heavily towards the Lost Frequencies vibes that I wasn’t expecting from Kygo, but sort of dissolves its flaws with an appealing melodic drop. However, in this case, I mostly care about the vocal and the atmosphere, which are both composed splendidly here.

Lyrics are extraordinary, especially if you are watching the music video (in collaboration with USO, a no-profit association): it keeps showing families reuniting, in a filter that closely reminded us of a product of interpolated rotoscope, however having a pastel of water-coloured pictures. It emanates joy, a warm and sublime tone that felt heartening.

In my honest opinion, The Chainsmokers did a proficient vocal performance, maybe one of my favorites ever from them, while Kygo was a bit lacklustre here. I didn’t relish the deja-vu impression of the breakdown, even if the melody is extremely captivating. If we had to sum up the lyrics and message in one word, it would be “superlative”.

I’m perhaps out of the ballpark, and the readers may likely be in the same situation, but “War World Joy” is a good selection that deserves a listen… Or at least “Family”, even better when watching the video along with it. I’m sure that some of you may be delectably impressed!
