EDM Reviewer’s Week 25 Recap

June 26, 201813 min read

Each week we’ll be partnering with The QR Network to compile a short recap of notable tracks that we didn’t have time to cover during the previous week. We hope you enjoy our selection and if you have any tracks you’d like to see here, please feel free to use our contact form or post your suggestions in the comments.

Tom Crusher – Overdrive

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/459731811″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

Coming hot off of his previous release, “Get Down,” Tom Crusher is back again with another great blend of big room and bass house. The patterns in the drop have a simplistic rhythm but are catchy nonetheless. The third section of the drop kept up a unique energy with breakbeat drum pattern and new synth. For the break, the melody is short, sweet, functional, as is the rest of the track. Another strong offering from Tom Crusher and Panther’s Bass House.

Ibranovski – Tic Tac

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/461906814″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

The fourth chapter of Ibranovski’s Ghetto Mainstream EP series brings us only two new bass house tracks. Tic Tac stands out for it’s hypnotic, quirky vocal with an equally quirky drop synth. There’s an interesting dark energy to the whole piece but the repetitive elements can quickly get on your nerves if you’re not vibing with it.

KAAZE – La Copa De Saxo (World Cup 2018)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/460934331″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

After all of the drama with the Guestlist4Good Anthem, KAAZE is back with an amazing free download. The intro features acoustic percussion which brings the carnal energy of the football stadium to your speakers. Obviously, the brass elements are fantastically executed carrying a strong melody in typical KAAZE fashion. My only complaint is carrying the same melody throughout the track with the exception of part of the second break. It is a fantastic melody that will certainly be stuck in your head along with the sexy brass elements.

Yellow Claw feat. Sofia Reyes – Bittersweet

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/438922452″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

A clean and modern house track that’s great for DJs as well as casual streaming. It’s carefree, full of summer vibes, and features female vocals that only get progressively more enticing as the track progresses. To accompany the strong vocals is a pleasantly muted guitar and low-passed percussion which provides a subtle melodic flourish to the piece. Overall, a fun and mild track that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Timmy Trumpet & TNT – Scarborough Fair

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/463159791″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

“The Underground” comes to mind with the first drop featuring some fairly standard hard bounce fair that’s been around for quite some time now. The break is extremely long with vocals that are hardly discernable amongst all of the reverb. Everything about this song is too drawn out with not enough substance to justify its runtime. The melody, when it finally comes in, is pretty solid with an infectious quality which makes me pump my fist in the air. It just seems like this track could have been so much more and lacks that special something.

72/100

Calvo – On the Move

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/452213865″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

When I first heard this track, I had a deja-vu moment which turns out to not be quite so since I quickly realized that this is almost a direct sequel to “In Love with You.” The identical key, similar melodic tricks, synths, leads, and pitch blending makes it impossible to call back to the superior predecessor to this track. This one lacks the emotional vocals of its predecessor and feels very uninspired all the way through. The break simply strips the drop of certain elements in a lazy fashion. When artists do follow-ups to past hits, usually they add something new like when Timmy Trumpet released “Deja-Vu” as a spiritual sequel to “Freaks.” Calvo’s latest track on Armada is a long step back from his previous work.

Husman – We Won’t Fall

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/451159584″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

Husman’s 3rd chapter of his EP series, “Return of the Mad Kind,” features three tracks that call back to some of his previous work while still moving his sound forward. We previously covered his trap offering, “Our Last Day,” in last week’s recap and the other track in this chapter, “Victory for Earth” is a solid psy-trance and progressive track which takes a more melodic work than “Arrival,” Husman’s other psy-trance song. Moving on to “We Won’t Fall,” which is actually a re-release from two years ago, is the true focus of this section. The first drop features the same pushdowns as “Heroic” as well as the same key signature. That’s where the similarities end as this track is more progressive flavored this time around. Husman always does a great job incorporating vocals and the synth and melodies are amazing as usual. The track features all of Husman’s greatest  traits which results in a very euphoric inclusion to the 3rd chapter of Return of the Mad King.

R3HAB & Conor Maynard – Hold On Tight (Tommy Jayden Remix)

Tommy Jayden has been fascinating to watch for the past year. He’s gone from making pretty standard future house to becoming one of the most recognizable big room sounds in the game. His atmospheric, almost bass house take on the genre is truly unique and has carried him through his latest releases on Revealed Recordings, Armada, and Break it Down music. This official remix to R3HAB’s future bass track breathes a fresh new life into the piece. While not much has been done with the breaks and vocals, the drop is heavy, bouncy, and fun as hell. It may not fit in tonally with the rest of the track but it’s such a strong offering and an interesting stepping stone on Tommy Jayden’s path to fame.

81/100

Birthdayy Partyy – Confess (feat. Raddix)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/459981258″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

A trap-like melody to start off with an ominous tone to boot. The vocals are expertly manipulated to keep them dynamic and intriguing. When the drop hits, Birthdayy Partyy brings the breakbeat drum patterns and bass that will rattle your speakers. The first drop relies a bit heavily on one particular synth but shakes things up by bringing back the vocals and some bass house swipes. The second break goes a more typical house route but messing with the vocal’s pitch gives the track a fantastic instability which leads into an exciting second drop which really lets loose and brings a riddim-like bounce which nearly forces your body to sway to the music.
