EDM Reviewer’s Week 24 Recap

June 17, 201812 min read

Each week we’ll be partnering with The QR Network to compile a short recap of notable tracks that we didn’t have time to cover during the previous week. We hope you enjoy our selection and if you have any tracks you’d like to see here, please feel free to use our contact form or post your suggestions in the comments.

Danny Avila feat. Machine Gun Kelly – Too Good to Be True (Brohug Remix)

It’s still hard for me to equate the quite gorgeous male vocals with the same guy responsible for “Wild Boy” with Waka Flocka Flame. Regardless, Brohug’s rendition of this beautiful track tastefully adds a clean Bass House drop which is much more unique than its generic Pop source material. Despite the high-frequency bass swipes, this remix has a much more relaxed vibe compare to Brohug’s other Bass House tracks and serves as a solid official remix for all of the House DJs out there.

Martin Garrix Feat. Khalid – Ocean

It’s always great to see EDM producers cross paths with mainstream artists. Compared to Martin Garrix’s past Pop tracks, this one stands out because of Khalid’s lyrical contribution which goes beyond the generic vocals of most EDM tracks. It’s lovely, dynamic, and not too on-the-nose with its emotional notes even though the strings can get a bit heavy-handed at times. Often times, these collaborations tend to get dominated by one of the parties involved but this one feels like a true partnership.

Dirty Palm – So Sick

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/457879260″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

One of the foremost pioneers of Future Bounce is back with yet another banger. The simple percussion and use of UK vocals in the breaks are infectious. The melody in the drop is catchy and the elements are diverse. This one is particularly fascinating because of how far he reached into his bag of tricks for this one for instance the strategic use of silence as seen in “Step Back.” Dirty Palm ventures into new territory by adding a few quick Bass House elements as well. Overall, a short a solid addition to Future Bounce and the Dirty Palm discography.

aUtOdiDakT & Haezer – Tech-Nooo

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/458846613″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

This track is short, simple, and not extremely original but I can’t deny its energy and groove. The relentless bass pulsating throughout the first drop might be annoying to some but I just can’t stop my foot from tapping and head from bobbing. The break comes along with a carried vocal and what sounds to be a train which takes us into the next drop which eases up on the frequency of the bass and plays around with triplets and other rhythms to give this short piece some diversity.

71/100

BLR – Wildfire (Original Mix)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/449061765″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

Not to be confused with the Deep or Festival Mix which were also released, the original mix version of Wildfire is another amazing track from BLR who has helped bring Tech and Deep House to a mainstream audience. Clean, futuristic synth pair beautifully with the airy, carefree female vocals. The subtle yet important progressions keep the track from being overly repetitive. There’s a subtle swing and bounce to this track as well which gives the piece a unique groove.

85/100

Maddix & KEVU feat. LePrince – Soldier

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/458686989″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

You can never go wrong by putting LePrince on the track. His energy and melodic reggae influence stand apart from other similar style vocals. The drop starts off with some Carnival flare before switching to Trap for the second half. The bass screeches and vocal samples set the track apart and give it a ton of energy. The second break maintains the Trap influence and a more intense build towards the  amped up second drop which doubles down on the screeches and powerful synths.

81/100

D-Block & S-te-Fan and Rebourne – Louder (LOUD Edit)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/457752522″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

This 2018 Edit of the classic from three years ago takes cues from the new direction that Hardstyle has been heading in. The main difference is the drops which swaps melody for D-Block & S-te-Fan’s Hard-Psy mixed with a high-pitched punctuating synth which seems to be influenced by Sub Zero Project. Not a lot else has changed but nostalgia and the strength of the original make this a noteworthy track.

78/100

Julian Jordan & Olly James – Bounce That

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/450667272″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”130″ iframe=”true” /]

Olly James has been on quite a Bass House trip recently but primarily focusing the low-end patterns and melodies. This track reigns in the more energetic side of the genre with a powerful distorted pushdown which reacts with the underlying bass patterns. The breakdowns are nothing special, only serving as a monotonous break until the drop comes back around. The drop is the strongest and most unique part of this track; while placing this track in a set, I couldn’t help but dance like a fool and pump my fist in the air when I mixed this one in.

74/100

David Guetta & Showtek – Your Love

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/458320326″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

When I saw these two names names back together, I thought we would be hearing the follow-up to their iconic Big Room banger, “Bad.” What we got instead was a weak, unoriginal Future House track which was just plain bad. The melody reeks of “Show Me Love” and Don Diablo’s “On My Mind.” While I didn’t expect much from David Guetta, I’m more disappointed in Showtek for being a part of this train wreck. Their past Future House track, “Moby Blues,” had so much more soul and emotion. I’m not surprised that Vassy didn’t come back on board and they had to call on Jake Reese instead, who opted not to include his name in the track.
