Life is full of coincidences. I was talking about a friend/designer at the group “The X” about their new splendid design for “Project North” and a few minutes later my phone vibrated. A new submission about Project North’s first release “Think Twice”.
I didn’t think twice before listening to it immediately. I was curious to discover this newborn duo, and I must admit that I loved their style since the very beginning. They call it “Acoustic Bass” and I think it’s an intelligent title for this particular genre, which fuses minimalistic and mysterious elements with a dark future bass drop, with a slight tribal influence.
Project North is composed of DAMSTERDAM and JRND. The two producers first built their own solo careers with releases on Lowly Palace (JRND) and Tribal Trap (DAMSTERDAM). Then they also collaborated in a three-track EP on Spinnin’ Premium, which we suggest checking out if you want a taste of their style. The EP was quite successful, and the connection between them efficient and so they decided to make Acoustic Bass together.
“Think Twice”, as said, is interesting. It’s the first time that I heard those sounds applied to a future bass structure, so we can admit that we have in front of us something particularly fresh. The two singers involved are Darrick Atwater (already present in the Spinnin’ EP and in another review we made, “Glass Heart”), and the rapper Ja-P. Ja-P adds that touch of underground rap and fits perfectly with Danny’s more emotional voice, a detail we didn’t miss.
However, we have lots of things to say about the base even though the vocal is splendid. “Think Twice” begins in a minimal way, with delicate drums escalating with a lightweight piano. It’s clear that Project North left some space to the vocalists, and it’s a clever idea because the drums alone are super catchy! Then, after a simple buildup, the drop strikes.
As said, there are tribal influences. Ethnic sounds are fused together with a majestic flute and those drums assume a different identity. That’s the genial touch: they are calm and hypnotic at first, then they wake up in the drop and add the energy we crave. Perfect work, congratulations!
With this wild yet elegant collaboration, Project North demonstrated that they have the right idea to keep producing hits. Acoustic Bass seems like an interesting genre, let’s await their future works!
