Thomas Newson – Ragga

Most of you guys know how picky I am while selecting this kind of music to review. Tribal electro house is one of the most saturated genres, because of its catchiness and effectiveness in live sessions. Reggaeish/ethnic vocals usually used in a repetitive loop, drop focused on emphasizing drums, minimal melody, maximum aggressiveness, this is Tribal house.
I rarely review tribal house because, as said before, I think it’s rare to find an interesting song for me. Its structure makes it difficult to find a “unique” tune to review, also I prefer more melodic approaches. However, today’s track is one of those rare exceptions.

And it is by someone who has conquered my heart with another genre before (dirty electro house), Thomas Newson.

Exactly, Marco V’s son is back on Revealed with another tribal song after his edit of “Revolution Drums”. This time with “Ragga”, a solid and hypnotic tribal production that incredibly impressed me.

I must be honest: my expectations weren’t high. I was expecting a generic song. “Ragga”, actually, doesn’t contain any particular or futuristic element. But it does its job in a perfect way. That drop contains a bouncy bassline mixed with a melody that grinds my ears. The drums are wild, brutal, hypnotic, and that curious vocal somehow works. It is a monotonous loop but it is an earworm.
The break consists of another vocal loop (transitioning into the drop’s loop) and some drums. Minimalistic and slightly static, I must add, but it keeps a solid and balanced rhythm, maintaining the listener’s attention till the magical drop.

“Ragga” is not a champion at creativity. But it does its job in a way that I can’t even describe. It’s catchy, guys.

Thomas Newson delighted me in a genre that I rarely listen to, and I don’t even know how. Congratulations!
