Unpredictable collaborations can turn heads— and so it did with David Guetta and Seth Hills pairing up for remixing Tiesto’s “Both” (featuring 21 Savage and BIA). An uncanny but intriguing scenario, but true to their styles, the original song got re-shaped for the festival audiences.
Out of his STMPD territory, which has become the home base for Seth Hills: the Dutch alias carved out and pioneered the explosive blurring between Bass and Electro House, which turned into the staple sound for Martin Garrix’s imprint. Even if the genre has slowly phased out in recent times, the “Rebound” creator has continued fleshing out his signature sonics; a sole reason as to why we got curious to see what approach he took with a lucrative opportunity of remixing Tiesto, that too with David Guetta.
The French veteran has been obsessed with the future rave sound, and that holds more precedence on this remix duty. It fits the bill— commercial and mainstage compatible— without being too complicated. The track initiates with the vocals from 21 Savage, using them as the center hook. An off-beat saw riff takes off simultaneously, as the drop introduces ‘donk’ style bass stabs and typical drums with glitchy FXs. While effective, the main synth riff doesn’t stand out, indistinguishable from other similar future rave records— simplistic in its rhythm.
Including a more atmosphere-oriented and Seth Hills-style breakdown, the instrumental makes use of arps and airy pads; here’s where the suspense builds up for an effective discharge of the otherwise linear drop, although the short duration holds back the remix unfortunately.
This version of “Both” is an upgrade to the original, but not without glaring flaws. Still, this is a decent team-up between two artists on different spectrums and doesn’t lack in terms of technical qualities, owing to their collective experience and skills.
