MR. BLACK is back on Revealed, this time with Diego Miranda and The Kemist!
The trio brought some tribal electro house into the Dutch label’s collection, under the name of “Boomshakalak”!

The song impressed us, at first, for its title. It’s weird, but it’s probably a mention of the famous word “Boomshakalaka”, used in basketball. As Urban Dictionary tells us, it’s an onomatopoeic “in your face.” Originally it’s about the sound of a slam-dunk – the “boom” being the dunk, and the “shakalaka” being the rattling of the backboard.

Said that, we noticed a missing “a” in the title of this release (we don’t know if because of copyright or misunderstanding)

Anyway, the main point of this review is about the wild drop of the collab!

It’s a song that may not impress part of the fans, but we found it interesting enough for a little review! “Boomshakalak” begins with the incredible vocal by The Kemist: the Jamaican vocalist has a perfect voice for the genre! Barong Family’s fans will recognize him (he worked with Yellow Claw, Wiwek, Dirtcaps and LNY TNZ) for sure.

Again, he delivered a solid performance. His vocal hypnotized us, creating a catchy and hyping break! This mood fits particularly well with the tribal-psy-electro hybrid created by MR. BLACK and Diego Miranda! The drop, in fact, presents a MR. BLACK signature bouncy bassline, together with a frenetic and shuffling pattern. Interesting idea, despite not being particularly “explosive” in terms of energy. That’s the weakness here, for us. After a while, the drop remains a bit flat in terms of rhythm.

MR. BLACK used his experience here (this structure may remind you some of his Revealed works), while we didn’t really notice a particular approach by Diego Miranda (probably he focused on details). “Boomshakalak” saves itself thanks to the splendid vocal and a particular identity. It doesn’t shine, but let’s be honest, it’s a fresh song, that will be beloved by the most “tribal-oriented” Revealed fans!
