Porter Robinson – Language

November 29, 20173 min read

It was late in the evening of some day inĀ 2013, when I had switched on my telly to get an update on the latest music. Fast forward five minutes, I tuned into a native music channel playing out the latest pop tracks of the chart. But unexpectedly, one of the most fascinating songs ever came up on the channel. It was the famous music video of Porter Robinson’s masterpiece, “Language”. I was instantly in love, I had never heard such an emotional and sublime production. That day still lingers in my memory. Today, it’s a big honor for me: I am able to write some words for what is considered the “magnum opus” of Porter Robinson’s work.

The self-taught musician, Porter Weston Robinson, stated in an interview that he was extremely inspired by trance music when he was only 14 or 15. He always wanted to craft a tune containing fathomless emotions, but fueled with energy to be played in clubs and gigs.

Then, within 5-6 years later the prodigy had done his masterstroke by creating “Language”.

For this, there was even a tweet gone viral, a few months ago, where Porter’s exceptional deed was compared to Sir Isaac Newton’s, who presented the gravitational theory around the same age as Porter was.

“Language” was a slight departure from his unique complextro and aggressive electro house. Porter did use complextro elements… But he mainly focused on bringing out the dreamy atmosphere and constituting a melody that would narrate a story. Also, Porter didn’t want to compromise the energy, so he adeptly used classical rushing electro-progressive synths. This not only resulted in a sensational breakdown, but a vivid and dynamic drop.

The second breakdown introduced the lovely vocal, bringing in tides of sentiment. This particular element made the song more kinetic and more lively than ever. One of the best vocals in history.

“Language” was initially released by Big Beats Records in US, but when the track got major appreciation, especially debuting in #9 in UK singles chartlist, one of the major UK nightclub and Label Company, Ministry Of Sound, signed it too. This led to the creation of the wonderful music video, racking up almost 10M views in YouTube till date.

Concluding, I would say that “Language” is perhaps a milestone in the history of electronic dance music. Robinson’s creation has undoubtedly enchanted hundreds and thousands of EDM fanatics with its intensity, and still does, to this day.

An unforgettable masterpiece.
