I’ve decided to start our “Vintage” review series with one of my favorite tracks ever, “Payback”.
Created by Steve Angello and Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman, “Payback” represents one of the highest peaks reached by progressive house. Even if just instrumental (there is a vocal version with Harrison, but I don’t consider it important), the energy and the goosebumps that managed to share with me during this time are incredible.
All the progressive fans waited more than a year for it, so I was really hyped when it came out. The cover was pretty cool, but that’s not the most important thing. What we cared is that Angello demonstrated once again to be an awesome producer, and DV&W to amaze me with their instrumentals. Together, their power was magnificent.
The tune has a powerful lead by Steve, and the classic DV&W structure: emotional and ready to explode break, insane melody, and a magical drop.
What’s different here is the energy added by Angello elements: “Payback” is slightly more powerful than the usual sweet and delicate DV&W songs!
The melody is still considered one of the best in history, in addition. I feel goosebumps everytime I hear it. I am not able to describe with words all the feeling this tune gave me… I think that “legendary” could be a reliable adjective.
“Payback” is, in conclusion, pure ART. A splendid masterpiece that you can’t miss or forget in any way. Three geniuses teamed up and gave to the world this explosive diamond.
