Notaker & Declan James – Who I Am (feat. Karra)

October 14, 20172 min read

Last week Monstercat, one of the most massive labels in EDM scene, released a remarkable EP. One of the tracks of that EP, titled “Who I Am”, from Notaker and Declan James (both hailing from the US), caught my attention. This track also features a lovely vocal from Karra, who already has lent her voice to several NCS releases.

The reason “Who I Am” caught my attention was for mainly two reasons. First, I really liked the emotional atmosphere attributed throughout the track, and secondly, the production is really experimental and unique. It reminded me a bit of Porter Robinson’s style, but once again settling on any one genre for this track would be an injustice. However, for sake of simplicity, I would go for “Chillstep”.

“Who I Am” starts with the luscious vocal and soaring atmospheric pads, slowly escalating, with the trap snares slowly coming up in the backdrop. Suddenly the vocal pauses. Then, it appears again, but this time the drop impacts with it. The transition from the breakdown to the drop is really smooth and well done, which lets the drop come with a gust of energy.

The drop has been crafted with precision, with creativity reeking out of it. Saw synths, which can be distinguished for future bass saw synths, play out rapid notes, but it’s not totally future bass. There is an 4/4 kick with the drop. The vocal go alongside the synths, without any conflict, but rather the combination makes a perfect atmosphere. A bright piano enters in the second part of the drop to add more sentiment, and makes the drop closest to perfection.

Its not every day that this type of experimental yet emotional tracks are released. The producers did a great job without doubt, and not to mention the elegant vocal from Karra. This one is definitely worth a listen.
