After his recent departure from being the face of former trio Dash Berlin, Jeffrey Sutorius hasn’t slacked any since. Nowadays, he’s a familiar face on Revealed Recordings with his BODYWRMR imprint designated under the Dutch label.
Anyways, there’s nothing much to discuss on this: there are several fine releases and remixes he has done for notable aliases (including Blasterjaxx and Nicky Romero). Sure, some of the team-ups make me wonder about Jeffrey’s involvement (22Bullets, Krimsonn and Timmo Hendriks often co-produce for others), but at least the credits are mentioned and the outcomes even better.
Cynicism apart, this get-together with ANG has a special something which led me to tak about “Sink Or Swim”. After the nice impressions left by “Firefly”, which indulged more in Trance, the said trio has tried to adopt an experimental mentality towards Progressive House, infusing a Future Rave (first half) and Trance sound. The result that leads is a high-performing composition that stunned me its robust anti-climax, slowly building an intense framework around an equally emotional vocal, all done so in an uncompromised Progressive fashion.
If acquainted with ANG, be sure that the drop launches with plenty energy. In fact, “Sink Or Swim” is extremely dashing, considering its genre. The breakdown comes off as static, although understandable as the vocal had to earn its paycheck, and hence the slower pace.
Okay, so what’s my dislike here? See, the Future Rave input gave worthy potential yet disappeared after a few seconds. For me, this record could have done the final sequence with another round of that, closing the circle and what would have made an even bolder yet creative decision. Though, that sounds rather distant from Jeffrey’s domain for now.
So, even with a lack of development is somewhat a sin for me, “Sink or Swim” doesn’t get submerged by lacklustre. Couple of surprising ideas, a leading vocal and a vitalized execution makes it edge ahead of its competitors. Take notes Garrix, I was falling asleep to yours today.
