This was our 2023

December 29, 20232 min read

Before 2023 takes its leave, we want to take a moment. Like everything else, EDM went through various changes in the course of the past twelve months; summarizing all of that here wouldn’t be possible, so we decided on aspects that defined the industry this year.

We definitely had some massive hits: the year commenced with “Rumble,” the quirky and viral collab between Fred Again.., Skrillex, and Flowdan. There were two back-to-back Skrillex albums as well, which took everyone off guard. Three months in, we got “Miracle”— Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding reuniting on an ethereal 90s trance-type record— another remarkable track from this year.

In terms of genre, melodic techno and tech house have kept their hold over the mainstage. Take Mau P, for instance: “Metro” with Kevin de Vries and “Dress Code” were both well received. At the same time, it’s good to see underground genres getting more spotlight with deserving indie artists.

This post won’t be justified without mentioning AI, as it has equally transformed the potential for electronic music. From replicating vocals to creating entire instrumentals from just recordings, generative AI has already made a sizeable impact— and will most probably continue to do so. Only time will tell as to how this tech will be developed and utilized, especially in creative scenarios.

And lastly, this year we had our seventh birthday! It’s an utmost pleasure to see readers engage on our posts. It was a difficult year, personally speaking, with small breaks caused by personal events that slowed down the usual posting frequency… But we are here, stronger than ever. Expect quality content and more surprises for the next year. Special thanks to our new writer Yasif (@yaskaiq) for his in-depth reviews!

Thanks for supporting us for the last 365 days, we will be back ready and recharged in 2024!
