• Short but vicious
• Intense buildup
• Leaves abruptly
Back to Disciple Round Tables and its entertaining, fun-packed dubstep releases! This time I have a familiar name for you: Whales (also known as Sex Whales). I discovered him some years ago with “Dead To Me” (feat. Fraxo and Lox Chatterbox), still on the top of my favorite trap tunes list! Also, recently available in a slowed + reverb flavor, if that’s your thing.
Anyway, Sex Whales transitioned into Whales and continued his journey, with the latest step being “Fuckin’” EP, freshly released via the Disciple’s sub-label.
And yes, it is short. All the songs last around a minute and a half, the exception being “Untouchable” (124 seconds) and the experience left me a bit puzzled since I felt that something was amiss. Let’s pick up “Fuckin’”, the protagonist of today’s review. Whales configured the tune with a crazy, eerie buildup that unfolds for 45 seconds; a terrific addition that immersed me into a scene out of a horror movie with the bubbling tension! This can also be experienced during the final seconds.
Then a growly drop burst in with all the arsenal of Whales’ has to offer in the dubstep arena. Well, hats off to this explosive sound which strikes hard and well, leaving a dynamic first impression on an innocent listener.
What I didn’t enjoy was the abrupt finishing, where the breakdown briefly came in prior to interrupting. The lack of a second drop was there, even if it’s hard to overdo the first one in terms of energy… “Fuckin’”, and the whole EP in general, provides a no-nonsense show. Yet, I had a bittersweet feeling of being left with a craving for more drops and extending those feelings for a while. Will there be a follow-up? Or some VIP edit? Only time will tell…
What do you think?
