Weekly Roundup LXII (Madonna, Nicky Romero, Mesto, Evilnoiz, and more featurings!)

February 13, 20235 min read

February has started off strong with abundant artists entering the month with creative energy. Who do we get this time? Madonna, Nicky Romero, Mesto, Evilnoiz, and more are featured in this installment of the Weekly Roundup!

Excision, Wooli – Titans
83/100

Justifying the title, bass scene icons Excision and Wooli cohorted to produce dynamite of a track; “Titans” begins with a cheeky narration about the apex predator, itself turning into gnarly wobbles a moment later. These further come in two packages: a house groove immediately followed by a pounding Dubstep one. It hammers through and lives up to the expectations!

Blond:ish, Darmon, Eran Hersh – Sorry (feat. Madonna)
80/100

It’s always interesting to see renowned acts work with talented and forthcoming names, and such is the case with “Sorry”. Featuring the diva Madonna herself, the three producers didn’t waste this golden opportunity to whip up an equally fitting instrumental.

Equipping Italo Disco aesthetics reminiscent of the era where the mentioned songstress ruled the charts, the team constructed a moody melodic progression having steady energy output with its slick groove. Although I didn’t prefer the duration of the radio edit, the track otherwise is splendidly done!

Nicky Romero – Turn Off The Lights
70/100

It seems there are energy-saving schemes being floated around by DJs in recent times. First, it was SHM and Fred Again… and now Nicky Romero and Mike Perry.

Apart from the generic titling and jokes, the Protocol Recordings label-head continued with his ravey Tech House sound on the latest single, and although it might be fairly effective on the dancefloors, it doesn’t strike out as particularly memorable.

Mike Perry, Leo Dante – Turn Off The Lights
74/100

Continuing on this ‘track naming’ bout, Mike Perry and Leo Dante came up with their version of “Turn Off The Lights“: significantly more melodic, the song is more of a crossover between pop-rock and future bass. Starting with the appealing vocals, the main hook lies in the drop with a bright guitar solo with a usual dance-pop groove.

Quintino – Name of Your DJ (3 Are Legend Edit)
45/100

A rare sighting, 3 Are Legend comes back once in a blue moon, only to disappoint. With all the reputed names working together, one would hope there better be an explosive in making. Alas, not this one.

Even though there’s a decent ramp-up toward the drop with MC Ambush on the mic, what arrives afterward is a hollow and cavernous assortment of one-note riffs and a drab kickdrum. If simplicity was the motive here, it does so but sloppily.

Mesto – Bring It Back
73/100

Venturing out into other sub-genres, the Future Bounce specialist Mesto decided to go for a bolder sound with “Bring It Back”.

With an unmistakable resemblance to STMPD bass house releases, the conventional vocal sample repeats until the drop introduces hoover-ish synths, instantly recognizable of similar tracks from Loopers or Julian Jordan. If it was 2019, this one would have genuinely left a lot more impact.

NWYR – Oblivion
77/100

W&W’s trance outfit NWYR has stuck to its root throughout the years, and “Oblivion” brings in the same sonority with old-school trance sounds mixed with a mainstage flavor. The main highlights would be the hypnotic breakdown employing reverb drenched synths, while the drop brings sizzling synths over a classic trance-type bassline. Definitely a very “NWYR” creation!

Evilnoiz, Baerli – BLOOD STONE
81/100

Horror and eerie slasher flick vibes go hand in hand with twisted and morbid Dubstep synths in “BLOOD STONE”, a brainchild of Evilnoiz and Baerli. Vocal incantations and suspenseful strings immediately transform into a full-blown riddim disorder, intending for the listener to get struck with sharp, abrupt rhythms.
