All I Want for Christmas is…

December 13, 20212 min read

A year ago, the beautiful “Christmas Time” by DV&LM, Brennan Heart, Armin van Buuren and Jeremy Oceans came out. I was rather sure that the song would become a Christmas hit of sorts… However, one rotation around the sun later, the collaboration hasn’t achieved great results, with “only” 500k views on YouTube and way lesser streams than usual.

Then came Smash The House’s “Home Alone” Christmas album, which had an impressive crew to boast (R3HAB, Blasterjaxx, NERVO, Ummet Ozcan, Timmy Trumpet) but got looked down upon by the community. It was a bunch of remixes slapped together, yet it’s actually one of the most interesting compilations around!

Honestly, it’s a pity since these are genuine ideas for a rather saturated market, where I feel there’s a ton of potential if someone hits the sweet spots. Christmas songs can last for decades, as a particularly celebrated American songstress has taught us!

On the other hand, EDM producers prefer to remix pop/traditional hits instead (90% of the “Home Alone” album are reworkings), while the few “daunting” independent experiments like “Christmas Time” or Kaskade’s Christmas album clearly underperformed. By this time, it’s clear that the audience wants to listen to the classics rehashed in an EDM salsa, so it’s safer to rework them. However, that’s a temporary solution that never lasted more than one or two years at best.

So, while we dance music fanatics wait for the right chart-seizing electronic tune to replace the Mariah Carey remixes in all the clubs, I will opt for “Home Alone” instead, and keep my eyes open in prospect of a promising replacement from other talents!
