About Listener’s Block

May 18, 20212 min read

The notorious “writer’s block” is commonplace for people like us (except for Miguel, a real review machine he is ahah). Today I am sharing with you something slightly different that I am experiencing in the latest months… I called it “listener’s block” to give a vague idea, and I am curious to see if the audience share the same monotonous feel in the recent times.

Writer’s block is when you have the blank page in front and you can’t find the idea to pen down the first word, let alone two or three paragraphs. Listener’s block is that boredom I experience when scrolling the new weekly releases and don’t have anything worth notable to comment about these songs. Neither in a positive or negative way; just neutral, nonchalant.

Cash-grabbing Slap House? Bashed and criticized already.

Generic Progressive House? Complained already.

The umpteenth Electronic pop song for the summer? Ugh, always the same story.

Sure, the current scenario encourages the “fast-food” kind of music, stuff created for catching the trend immediately and then be forgotten after its five minutes of fame, especially with the established names who have become so predictable. Writing three hundred words feels like a herculean task for their latest tracks.

There are quality releases around certainly, but after listening to them for one or two times, I don’t keep them in my “saved” library… Can’t even start having hinderance during writing as I don’t find enough reasons to do the article in the first place. Well, except for that occasional gem which impresses me, I would like to bring more “important names”, since it’s more relatable content. I am particularly speaking about major releases today, since I know that by opening SoundCloud will lead to me new smaller names upbringing their own niches in dance music. But it is important to differentiate our catalogue.

So today, I am trying to not complain, and asking for your help. Have you experienced a similar “boredom”? How did you manage to get over it?
