• Tribal and Psy-Trance influences
• Generic and overused structure
• Catchy drop (but is there an equal teamwork?)
Taking a quick look into the rather unpredictable schedule of Revealed Recordings, this particular work made me surprised because of the parties involved in making it. First we have Carta, an esteemed figure on the genre and then there’s the Panamanian act Gian Varela, whose original roots lie at Latin music before making transition towards the mainstage EDM scene.
As we dive into the résumé of these personages, the Chinese DJ/Producer has crafted a ton of tracks sharing similarities with today’s highlight. On the other hand, Gian’s input in this synergy doesn’t seem as convincing, or perhaps his latest collaboration with DISTO was a first step in a different direction.
Anyways, on the serving plate, we have the commonplace recipe presented to us: the typical and prancing tribal drums are laden throughout as the drop works with a teasing synth riff. Yet, Gian’s contribution remains questionable here. Is it the melody which has hints of Latin inspiration to it; then again, Carta has showcased this sort of hooks beforehand. The second segment that follows parallels itself on the same structure, this time with a longer (and efficient) build-up that drives the energy for the second round of drop.
Despite obvious flaws in its arrangements, “Alarma” is a decent release that I admired to some extents, and will be repeating it for coming days. The outcome is grabby and adds to the repeat value, albeit it almost misses the mark of being completely distinct and refreshing enough to change my opinion entirely about Big Room.
