JON & LARSEN – Dream

December 5, 20202 min read

• Classic Future House schema with sweet vocal chops
• Progressive House twist in the Club Mix
• Common schematics, but engaging experience

This a sort of “double review”, because I first came across with the original mix of “Dream“, and then I discovered the Club Mix, which is a Progressive House version… Thus, I decided to review both of them!

The German duo JON + LARSEN crafted an entertaining production, capable to give a good time with a creative use of vocal chops and a bouncy bassline. Radio-friendly, sure, and this clashes a bit with most of our usual decisions, but I think that there is enough material for an in-depth analysis this time.

The original mix fuses Tropical House and Future House vibes in a classic way: a sweet breakdown introduces the warm vocal to the listener, and that clearly was an exciting experience. The vocalist delivered an excellent performance, well supported by a catchy buildup. After that sweet moment, I met the drop: an explosion of complex vocal chops, a bouncy sequence that managed to give a dynamic feeling despite its slightly predictable schema. In particular I would like to linger on my favorite element: the Future House piano, which gave me an heartwarming sensation. It’s such a common sample that, in my opinion, it’s becoming almost annoying, a clichè, but when wisely used the results can be satisfying.

Speaking about the Club Mix, a version that could be enjoyed by many of our fans, we find a Progressive House structure instead of the aforementioned Future House schema… I’ll give to that version a 65 because, in my opinion, the mixing quality was lower and the vocal chops weren’t synergizing well with the bassline, but it could represent a good option for a more EDM-oriented listener.

Concluding, “Dream” and its emotional atmosphere could be a good pick for a radio-friendly playlist, and I recommend to give a listen to JON + LARSEN’s work!
