Masello – Who I Am

August 12, 20192 min read

• Delicate, enchanting essence in the breakdown
• Impressive technical quality
• Slight lack of personality in the overall picture

Being on holiday, I had little time to explore and review new music. However, I had this little gem in my archive that I want to show you…Who I Am” by the Norwegian talent, Masello impressed me in the right way.

I am a big fan of the progressive house that comes from North European producers. It often has those “SHM” vibes that, with their nostalgic mood, get me every time. Masello has chosen his debut with intelligence: the classic progressive house structure presents a clean mix, a quality vocal, and a catchy melody. These are vital ingredients in the genre, and the producer has hit all targets.

A calm piano began playing in the breakdown (reminding me of Avicii) and was accompanied by a sweet, melancholic vocal and, successively by elegant strings. That section is somehow relaxing, and despite consisting of fewer elements, all of them perfectly fit together. The smooth transition into the drop was my favourite part; everything was so natural. The segment, then, entertained me with a dynamic bassline and an engaging melody. That’s classic progressive, and that’s also my little problem with “Who I Am”.

I will be honest: I didn’t find that “unique personality” I was looking for. “Who I Am”, considering that it’s a debut, has impressive quality, but it does not explore the boundaries of the genre enough. There is room for development, indeed, and I will keep an eye on Masello in the future. That’s the right way to begin a career!

Concluding, “Who I Am” is a little gem that I needed to review. Its delicate atmosphere and the overall impressive quality makes it one of the best debuts I’ve ever heard! There is some creativity to add in the mix, but that’s quality EDM. Good work, Masello!
