Hardwell – Summer Air (feat. Trevor Guthrie)

June 4, 20192 min read

• Fresh vocal by Trevor Guthrie
• Avicii’s standard formula
• 2014’s summer vibes

June is starting, and as fast as the temperatures start to rocket the top producers start to release poppish tracks, with the obvious intention of getting one of the most wanted prizes of the year: the “hit of the summer“. It’s Hardwell’s turn now, and, if commercial, the final result was way better than what we expected, so let’s get into it and explain why I extracted that conclusion!

As its name suggests, “Summer Air” has a lot of summer vibes on it, starting from the typical guitar until the recognizable voice of Trevor Guthrie, which was the singer of the hit “This Is What It Feels Like“, crafted by Armin Van Buuren. The break is refreshing, as expected in this style, but I was really happy when I heard its BPMs, because I could confirm that it wasn’t future bass or reggaeton. Thank you, Hardwell.

The overall concept of “Summer Air” has some influences from Avicii, and the drop is the point when you can evidently notice it. Some kind of trumpet plays the main melody (Hey Brother?), being accompanied by a strong bass and some piano chords, following the simple but effective formula that brought Avicii a lot of his success. The result is pretty enjoyable, but the melody is light years away from the Avicii’s charismatic ones. Many artists tried to emulate the Swedish legend in the past year, but the results were always pale copies.

Even if it’s not a scene breaker, I really appreciate the vibe of the track, which slightly reminded me of some hits of the golden times of EDM, like “Red Lights” by Tiesto or Calvin Harris’ “Summer“, for example. It also has that Avicii’s soul that we are missing right now in his posthumous releases… I’m sure that “Summer Air” is a clear candidate to be the 2019’s hit of the summer! Don’t expect a single creative element, but finding one in these summer releases is beyond imagination.
