4 AM Mix – 79/100

With the festival season starting with a full effect, we have different artists unveiling their awaited IDs to increase the hype even more. Today, we will be talking about the latest record from the renowned Dutch artists Dash Berlin, as they have finally removed the curtains from a production which got played for over a last couple of years. It is a collaboration with the reputed vocalist Jonathan Mendelsohn, titled as “Locked Out Of Heaven”. In addition, there is another recent VIP mix on the album, named as “Dash Berlin 4AM Mix“.

For people wondering if the title of the song sounds familiar from somewhere, it indeed is. A cover of the hit pop song by the leading American singer/songwriter Bruno Mars, this track instantly caught the attention of many fans. The original soundtrack, which came out way back in 2012, was part of Bruno Mars’ album “Unorthodox Jukebox”, and was much appreciated and listened. Hence, there are no doubts this re-work got embedded with similar charm and enticing tone. It was played multiple times in various gigs and festivals, but finally got to see the light of the day the previous week.

It will be appropriate to start first with the original mix. Beginning with a rhythmic introduction, the hypnotic vocal materializes elegantly in the breakdown. As usual, Jonathan Mendelsohn did a great job in capturing that alluring vibe from the original song. The intense saw synths takeover next, bringing forth a vibrant and chiming melody. However, the riser changes the tone, swiftly bringing in a vigorous Electro drop. Consisting of distorted and rumbling lead synths, this portion of the instrumental makes it even more appealing.

The “4AM” mix version, on the other hand, sets the BPM slightly higher for a psy-trance arrangement. We liked the variations included, with a stuttering and hulking bassline accompanying throughout. Most notably, the breakdown differentiates with a distinctive melody, which ensures this remix to be unique. In overall, this alternative delivers a festival-friendly and aggressive approach.

Summarizing, “Locked Out Of Heaven” is yet another solid release from Dash Berlin, and not to forget the noteworthy role of Jonathan Mendelsohn for the voice. The wait was definitely worth it for this one!
