Risky choice, guys.
Luckily, we loved “2012”, the new collaboration between two of WALL’s veterans… Afrojack, the boss himself, and his protègè, Ravitez! The idea behind this amazing big room production is easy to understand from the title: Destructive vibes in the scene. In addition, picking that particular year is symbolic of the “old-school” big room scheme of “2012”! The year that signed the beginning of the golden era of the genre, even though the real influences are from 2014/2015 tunes.
However, this doesn’t mean that the result is an old/outdated release! We feared that such a release wouldn’t be able to adapt in today’s scene… But thankfully enough, Afrojack and Ravitez are two of the most talented producers around, and that has been easily avoided with a hybrid between fresh and vintage. This particular combination is super effective, we hope to hear similar ideas in the future!
The break is a classic example of Afrojack’s ability. Its structure is present in many of his old releases. It’s slow, with a calm and hypnotic melody and that incredibly unique bassline rising in the background. It doesn’t bring much energy, being honest, it’s more like a “transition” than a real element of “2012”, but that’s normal. Ravitez added his vibrant style in the buildup and the explosive drop, realizing a powerful and aggressive final result. The frenetic melody smells of “golden age of big room” vibes very much, with some reminiscence of the epic “Tsunami” and older Ravitez tunes like “Musicbox”. The frenetic and quite anxious structure is typical from the Dutch producer, also present in a few progressive creations by him.
In conclusion, “2012” is a rare gem. The two talents didn’t fail in reworking a theoretically outdated structure in a fabulous and fresh collab, and we are happy about it. Impossible to miss for big room lovers!
