Nicky Romero – PRTCL (ft. Spyder)

January 14, 20182 min read

84/100

After more than half a decade of its foundation, Protocol Recordings is a remarkable imprint in the dance music scene. The eminent Dutch label has decided to honour its 100th release with a nifty production from the owner and founder Nicky Romero himself. Equipped with an energetic vocal from Spyder, “PRTCL” has been precisely embedded with the signature electro-groove house sound.

“PRTCL” brings back the signature electro groove house sound of Nicky Romero, used in his famous tracks such as the “SOTU” and  “Camorra”. In a minimal manner, it manages to keep the essential dynamism and pep to make it sound interesting and energetic. The track initiates with kicks and hi-hats, and a groove bassline synth playing out in the backdrop. The intro without delay subsidies to the brief riser, which takes up to the vivid and intriguing drop.

The drop impacts with efficacy as it brings in the groovy electro bassline synth from the intro, now intensified as it is coupled along with a metallic sonorous synth. Even though that part doesn’t bring in any other major elements, the synth and bassline together dominate in the drop and sweep in a robust attribute to it. Then, here comes in Spyder with his engaging vocal, given a slight mechanistic tone. Along with kick and other percussions, the breakdown tries to keep up with the same steady pace as the drop. The escalating tone of the breakdown makes it a perfect bridge to the second drop, as it proficiently merges with the riser to give a perfect climax feeling.

In few words, “PRTCL” is a superb release as can be expected from a “100th” release, thus starting the year for Protocol recordings with a bang. Old school and nostalgic, symbolising the Protocol signature groove and respect towards the past. Time passes, but Nicky Romero never forgets his origins.
