Today we bring here something chilly. And what’s chillier than Kygo in the EDM world? Few artists, trust me, few artists.
“Riding Shotgun” is a song I’ve chosen to represent his latest EP because it’s one of the most interesting ones.
A huge help to Kygo tracks comes from vocals. The Norwegian artist always picks up great singers, and this move, although shifting his tropical house to a pop context, make his music catchier and more professional.
Tropical house is a genre hard to approach in a creative way. You have some rules, you must follow them. Kygo is really good in that, while maintaining a unique relaxing freshness.
“Riding Shotgun”, in collaboration with Oliver Nelson, so, has the typical Kygo elements, but a unique elegance that impressed me.
Bonnie McKee made a superlative work, and even if I’m not a big fan of her voice, I have to take off my hat in front of her part. Wow.
Kygo added a good tropical base, with a vintage lead, typical melody, some well made vocal chops… Classic but efficient job.
That’s a strange situation, it always happens with Kygo. The song has not any creative or innovative idea, but it entertains with its catchiness. Really elegant and sweet, but I must admit that with another singer instead of Bonnie McKee this should have been way worse.
In conclusion, “Riding Shotgun” is a borderline track. If you like the gene, it’s pretty nice, but you can get bored easily.
What do you think?
