I have never been a huge Skrillex fan, so this review will be “colder” than usual. I respect him as the great artist he is, but I’ve never talked well about his style and career in the past. I won’t do it today, too, because I don’t want to make a long article.
Today I will focus on his latest remix, “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar.
I appreciated the original, even if, because of linguistic reasons, I’ve never properly understood and loved American rap. It was a nice rap tune, but I was really curious to hear how Skrillex worked on that.
Of all the musical genres, rap is maybe one of the most difficult to remix in an EDM key. Rap remixes are rare and difficult, but I must say that Sonny managed to create a pretty good output this time!
The genre is obviously trap, pretty aggressive and “dark”.
I may have some complaints to make, but first of all, make me say that:
This is a nice trap remix. I liked the drop, it had the right energy, and the hip-hop atmosphere conserved.
But, in my humble opinion, this is not a superlative remix.
I know that Skrillex had to work on a difficult song, but the output is not “special” as expected. He had followed the classic trap guidelines: minimal break (during some parts we have just some claps), strong buildup, aggressive trap drop with a metallic lead. Nothing particularly new.
I still enjoyed the “Humble” remix, Skrillex made a super drop and reworked perfectly the vocal, but in terms of innovation and creativity, this is not what the American producer has accustomed us.
What do you think?
