Ohh, this will be a difficult review, I’m ready to receive critics and complaints.
Anyway, “Punjabi” has been, using a euphemism, “saved by the bell”.
In this case, the bell is the second hardstyle drop, a part I really loved because of its surprise effect, its creativity, and aggressiveness.
Timmy Trumpet and his psy-trance style are back, together with the great producer Dimatik, on Dharma Worldwide! This was the first non-KSHMR release, and it received a lot of complaints. I agree on some of them, and I disagree on others.
So, first of all, the song is catchy. The Indian vocal is hypnotic, exactly what I was expecting from the KSHMR label, but I must admit that it isn’t related to Trumpet&Dimatik style. It seems slightly forced, they produced a Vini-Vici style song and used an Indian break and vocal to fit it on Dharma.
I know, Timmy Trumpet already made a couple of psy tunes, but I still consider “Punjabi” forced.
In the first psy-drop, the vocal becomes particularly annoying. I loved the bassline, so why giving so much importance to the vocal?
Anyway, the real surprise is the second drop. The catchy guitar, in the buildup, is accompanied by some rawstyle claws, and suddenly… We have that hardstyle drop. Loved it, creative, unexpected and fascinating: a symbol of Timmy Trumpet craziness.
“Punjabi” is a hard festival track, so I’m pretty sure that when played live will destroy the whole stage. I personally appreciated only 42 seconds of it, (the second drop), and a couple of creative details… But I will keep an eye on it, definitively. The only sure thing is that Dharma is quickly creating an own identity, based on creativity and ethnic mood.
