Marshmello ft Selena Gomez – Wolves

October 29, 20173 min read

72/100

Perhaps one of the biggest collaboration has happened in the domain of commercial dance-pop (or call it EDM-pop). Marshmello, the mysterious masked artist, better known for his hits like “Alone” joined forces with the pop superstar Selena Gomez. The result is quite appreciable, with Marshmello using his signature trap sounds, providing a solid base to the luscious vocal. “Wolves” is more a chill, laidback tune but still catchy enough.

The track got some mixed views from people when it was announced. The cover art, for instance, faced some heat from the crowd for being “Unoriginal” and “Lousy”. However, the song overcame this and has got some positive thoughts after the release.

Personally, I appreciate dance-pop. But I will be reviewing this tune from the point of EDM. Ehhhhmm… Marshmello tried his best there, but “Wolves” still is a bit generic and mainstream. However, Selena Gomez and her splendid voice helped it very much.

Starting from the breakdown, I was really impressed. The breakdown is quite catchy and instantly gets stuck in the head. The vocal is perfectly supported by the lovely guitar strumming in the backdrop. The overall atmosphere is not only emotional, but also has a nice progression to it. I wouldn’t disagree on the fact that the breakdown makes this song an instant hit.

The breakdown slowly escalates as the chorus comes in, and hence increases the tension in the atmosphere, leading to the drop without much undue pressure.

The drop, however, was a bit of disappointment to me. I expected a bit aggressive drop, as Marshmello generally does, but this, however, is quite chill and calm. The drop has a signature Marshmello trap groove, with his usual mid bass synth playing in the backdrop. The main element is the sample of the vocal with some effects.

My final verdict would be that it does live up to the excitement that it created pre-release, but I am desperate to see a splendid remix to give this tune a new twist. The original song, however, could be better in my opinion. I can’t wait to see how remixers will work on this vocal and interesting melody. “Wolves”, in  EDM terms, could bring us some fire remixes, and, taken alone, is a nice song!
