Music and Economy: A collapsing Bridge

October 6, 20202 min read

Imagine a dreary universe without entertainment cultivated from various form of arts. Terrifying as the thought is, it is becoming slowly a reality in many parts of world, including the epi-center of music: UK. Earlier this week, UK’s Minister for Care at the Department of Health and Social Care, Helen Whately declared that “it doesn’t make sense to continue supporting jobs where there isn’t simply work at the moment”, also effective on nightclubs or musicians who are self-owned/freelancers. Furthermore, the country’s government has announced massive reduction in grants for self-employed individuals via the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS).

Statistics from the past year speaks how pointless this rulings are. From a recent survey from the nation, it was found that the music scene provided over whopping £5.2 billion to the UK economy, inclusive of the live-sector which made over £1.1 billion itself. Various significant jobs ranging from event management teams to performers are in severe danger now, with the foreseeable future not instilling any hopes of return for gigs and club-openings.
