Is HEXAGON the new Radar?

July 25, 20203 min read

This has become a recurring theme, as current scene in this industry is favouring musicians or labels who opt for as many releases possible in a short period. We have talked about how Zero Cool Records, STH, Revealed Radar and some others have taken this approach to provide multitude of songs every week, but resulting in forgettable and average productions which negate the quality.

And yet again, another independent label has taken decision of pursuing this. The esteemed HEXAGON Records, erstwhile sub-label of Spinnin’ Records and founded by the Dance music veteran Don Diablo, is barraging its audience with at least of two releases per day.

Personally, we always respected the good work of HEXAGON’s managers and Don Diablo, who created a solid base for the Future House artists over there. In the latest period, however, the new “quantity over quality” approach has taken control, with the creation of new sublabels in order to boost the rhythm at insane levels. Generation Hex was the first (already criticized by us for the evident quality drop), with 5 releases every week. Then we have Dropgun’s sublabel Prophecy, Retrovision’s Time Machine and JLV Deep House-Oriented Something Good. Let’s not forget about King Arthur’s Bring The Kingdom! Ehy, there is also “FUTURE“, the new label for “future sounds”… Totalizing an insane amount of music published every week, all under HEXAGON quality trademark, which is obviously losing some credibility.

Introducing sublabels is a natural choice for every big label around there, let’s be honest. However, there is something in the unhealthy way HEXAGON is creating them that makes us think that behind them there is the desire to exponentially increase revenues with more releases rather than evolving its structure. Without a good management plan, these labels are going to have a bad time, and there is the solid risk to ruin the HEXAGON brand with this tactic.

We won’t divulge into how this specific business-motif is unworthy of application, as the reduction in overall benchmark of the imprint is quite noticeable. It is unfortunate to see this happening, since this very label had once innovated the House scene with many underrated gems.
