Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis – Used To Love

November 7, 20192 min read

• Unharmful, predictable composition
• Outstanding quality of the sound design
• Easy to like, difficult to remember

Still only 23, super-producer Martin Garrix can make any university student question their life choices. Following the global success of “Animals” in 2013, his discography has been a string of other hits, both of the club-oriented and radio-tailored varieties. So, it’s not a surprise to see a new poppish EDM release, this time with Dean Lewis.

Is “Used To Love” going to be the next hit single for both of these guys?
It will likely be in terms of numbers, because this is tailor-made for radio success. Martin and his team are continuously hitting the target, and they know how to create high-quality material that pleases the masses.

Does it bring anything new to the table?
Not in the slightest. It sounds exactly like you would expect a Garrix/Lewis collaboration to sound like… In a predictable, almost boring way.

You’ve probably heard of Dean Lewis thanks to his hit singles “Be Alright” and “Waves“… What a performer! Thus, let’s talk more about the base.

The drop sounds much like one of Garrix’s previous hits, “Scared To Be Lonely“, while the breakdown takes inspiration from tracks like “Pizza“.
Here Martin has done a great job working with the guitar rifts he generally uses which perfectly blends with the piano chord progression.
You can also hear some melodic violin tunes in between the song before the emotive drop takes place. Nothing new, unfortunately.

We are becoming a bit tired to notice how Garrix isn’t developing his sound recently. Even though I would adopt the same tactic if I was a famous producer.

Similar, unharmful, safe releases, without major differences and quality vocals. Of course, this conceptual laziness heavily influences our final rating. Dean Lewis killed it, the quality level is undoubtedly high, but where is the passion? The creativity?
Summing up, “Used To Love” positions itself in a comfortable segment of the music market, and that’s all. Easy to like, difficult to remember.
