73/100
• Psy-trance elements infused with Electro house
• Curious vocal sample
• A breath of freshness in the Spinnin’ catalog
I’m not primarily a psy-trance listener, but “Gaia” deserved a review. This new collaboration between the psy-trance bosses and Blastoyz has some fresh elements that we must analyze with caution. Little note aside: there the sad EDM tradition of inserting specific names in collaborations when it’s clear that they don’t even produce. As we always do on those occasions, we blatantly ignore these names.
Anyway, speaking about serious things: “Gaia” is quite impressive. First of all, Vini Vici finally used a non-ethnic vocal sample: instead, we have a curious (and rather funny) distorted squeaky loop, difficult to describe. Sure, their ethnic vocals are part of their signature sound, but I enjoyed hearing something different once in a while.
Then, let’s speak about the three drops. There are various combinations between psy-trance and Electro house in all of them, and I particularly appreciated the second one. Energetic and hypnotic, as expected from such expert names. The breakdown is relaxing, with a hypnotic flute and a delicate, majestic vocal. We can recognize some Egyptian vibes in it, very fresh. The overall results aren’t as unforgettably catchy as some of their hits, but it’s always nice to see some experimentation around.
In the end, “Gaia” is a complicated song. I’m pretty sure that I missed many exciting elements while writing this review. It’s experimental, for Vini Vici and Blastoyz standards, but good material for Spinnin’. The most recognizable features are the unique vocal loop used and the magnetic flute element, I suggest paying attention to them. So, that’s all. It’s definitely a release to check out.
