Bassjackers & Sunstars – Block

84/100

• Unexpected collaboration, refreshing single
• Funky, especially because of the melody
• Composed of signature styles, yet unique to good extents

Surprising the audience with this unexpected collaboration, we have another dance-floor ready production to review and talk about. This, as said, is another interesting and significant team-up between two different set of superlative artists. On one hand, we have the veteran Dutch duo Bassjackers, who need no introduction, and the other being the uprising Italian trio Sunstars. Both of the names ascertain quality in their works, and their new instrumental does too. Named as “Block”, this funky yet refreshing Spinnin Records release stands out from the rest!

Talking about the stage names involved here, we start with Bassjackers. The duology unveiled two of their singles, “Switch” along with native talents Blasterjaxx and “Riddle”. While “Switch” included heavy festival hitting ingredients, “Riddle” sampled one of the 80s chart-topper and worked it with modern day, without compensating the dance elements. Speaking about Sunstars, they have precedingly released “Do It Right” and “Feel It” (which we reviewed), both with the US based Breathe Carolina. This trio can be recognised immediately for their funky sounds, which enhances the groove like anything. “Block” carries the same attributes, but polished even more by the renowned pair involved in the project.

Starting with hi-hats and kick laden intro, the production further incorporates rhythmic bassline with vocal snippets. The underlying elements fade away, giving space to the vox which leads the breakdown. Complementing it is pluck synths and subtle melody, which remain in the background as usual. The riser follows soon, delightfully elevating the energy as the transition happens. Arriving swiftly, the drop changes the tone with resonating synths, which somewhat reminded us of Curbi. However, shuffling bassline and the synths work hand in hand, following offbeat and energetic schematics with precision. This change uplifts the stamina, engaging the listener to continue for next break segment.

In a nutshell, “Block” deviates from usual expected groovy sound, but amalgamates signature style of both the artists to impressive extents!
