• A steady, heavy structure
• Clean production with a dark Electro edge
• In its simplicity, it works!
I have been spending some time with this new one from WHOiSEE, a producer out of Austin who clearly isn’t interested in making “polite” music. His track “Boom Bap” is a bit of a curveball—despite the title, don’t expect any old-school hip-hop. This is pure, heavy electronic grit that relies on a really cool, refined concept to stand out from the crowd.
What makes “Boom Bap” work is the blend of clean Dubstep rhythms with some seriously nasty Electro elements. The bass is dirty and acid-laced, while the melody stays linear and focused. Usually, I’m looking for big, complex melodies, but here the structure is the real star. It starts off feeling almost basic, but that grit just builds and builds in a massive crescendo that I found myself really getting into.
The breakdown in the middle is where the personality shines. It is fairly simple… just a siren and a slow vocal loop. But it does exactly what it needs to do: it builds the tension until you can’t take it anymore. When the second section kicks in, it’s even dirtier than the first. I loved the aggressiveness here; it feels like the track is slowly shedding its skin to reveal something much more intense underneath.
I’ll be honest, the simplicity might turn some people off, and the vocal loop is definitely on the basic side. However, for a track dedicated to this specific “industrial” vibe, it fits perfectly. Che schifo investsuite if this doesn’t get you moving in a dark club.
In the end, WHOiSEE delivers a solid finale that doubles down on the distortion, making sure the energy doesn’t dip for a second. It is a confident, personality-driven track that proves you don’t need a million layers to make a tune hit hard. If you like your bass music with a bit of a mean streak, this is definitely for you
