Stop. Reset.
Your Digital Voyage begins here.
The story of today is creative. It’s something new. It’s an album from Canadian artist ReSeT that stroke a chord in me because of its amazing concept.
ReSeT has more than a decade of experience in creating music, and this album has a long story. Started from his first songs when he was in undergrad, then evolved during his master, developed when he was in Spain at Berklee. Indeed, I feel an evolution not only in the sound between different passages, but in the story. Because Digital Voyage tells us about Red and Blue, divided into a digital world.
I leave to you the promotional trailer created by ReSeT with the help of his sister that shows the story more in details, including the sound framework of the album, rich in constrast between glitches and calm melodies. Yes, because this artist is eclectic, as he loves to experiment with visual VFX, with incredible results. I particularly loved the natural tone of the trailer, which uses analog video processing for a more natural vibe!
So, let’s see this story of “Digital Voyage, Vol. 1“. The digital world Red is falling into is an orchestra of different sounds. We have the glitchy and experimental sounds that are striking against the lofi vibe of the “natural world”, and this concept opens up a see of potential. I’ve never thought about this genre of EDM in this way, and it’s great to tell the story while clearly stating in which universe is being set.
The album talks about the feelings the two might have while being separated in unknown spaces, like freedom from each other, grief from missing one another, and happiness in living a colourful life. It hints at themes of a digital self and what it means to be human trapped in a virtual space. The original fight when Blue and Red before they are separated begins losing their importance when you acknowledge the real distance between the worlds, both in a musical and emotional way.
Speaking from a technical design, the sound design is excellent. There is influence from Porter Robinson, one of the biggest sources of inspiration for ReSeT, bur also a new perspective, particularly enriched by the complexity of the basslines and new sounds from vocals and synths.
My favourites are “Last May” and “Human“. The first because the vocal really added a top of quality, building a layer of different sounds that goes great against the laid-back bassline, expecially after the first section where there is a sudden switch. Really creative tune. The latter because of the intricacies of the lead and bassline, without vocals but with a concentration of element that makes the final result impressively complex to digest, but it goes with a blast. Real melodic glitchstep hit.
Overall, “Digital Voyage, Vol. 1” is a fantastic story with different tracks exploring human and natural concepts in a totally new way. I see a lot of potential in ReSeT and I’m definitely recommending this.
