Two albums reviewed today, whoof. “she is the moon” and “she is the sun” take you on a journey of relaxing sounds, rich with surprises, unpredictable twists, and a quest for “pure” sound design. These albums balance minimalism with exotic intricacies that require several listens to fully appreciate. Which I did, for your pleasure.
Not tiresome at all, despite the double effort needed to listen to all those beautiful songs and write a short review about kretzschクレツ‘s ingenious idea. The producer, Dutch artist Thomas Kretzschmar, has a unique sound in the EDM scene—a sound I rarely review but trust me, it will be crucial in understanding the genius of this double release.
Why the double album concept, you may ask? “she is the moon” and “she is the sun” are two very different sides of the same personality, and listening to both is the key to truly diving into Thomas’ personal sound. I recommend starting with the “sun” side, probably the more natural choice given kretzschクレツ’s background in lofi. He has great experience with several notable releases and hundreds of thousands of streams. My favorites are “weekend dreaming” and “uncertainty.”
Even though I never review lofi, it’s my most-listened genre on Spotify. I put it on in the background when working or relaxing, so I’m well familiar with the zen aura it creates and its patterns. The producer created a baseline with the usual dreamy synths and chilling pianos—minimal and calming.
The genius idea is blending all of this with drum and bass. The result is “she is the sun“, where lofi evolves into something very articulate and rich in complexity, while keeping some of the original calming vibes. This is so interesting, guys! I particularly appreciated the jazzy vibes of “solar collapse” and the intro, “amateratsu,” where energetic percussion mixed with an old-school sample immediately shows off the unique concept.
Blending two different genres together is not easy, so imagine making an entire album out of it! Crazy, you say? Now comes the second twist: another album with a completely different concept!
“she is the moon” showcases kretzschクレツ’s vision of lofi blended with jungle and breakbeat. Slightly further in my comfort zone but still super interesting! The piano dominates the composition of this darker side of the series, maintaining the relaxing vibes (remember, lofi always dominates in this review) while experimenting with different patterns and daring to present more experimental concepts. An example is “//MOON(VOID)[01001101]” (mirroring its equivalent in “she is the sun”) a breakbeat take on lofi where the glitchy chops create a hypnotic composition. Mix this with more laid-back tracks like “moonlit bay,” which resembles more classic structures, and you have an eclectic mix of sounds, all of them intriguing.
In summary, both albums are two amazing sides of Kretzschクレツ’s efforts in transforming one of the most difficult genres to stand out in, due to its competitiveness and the challenge of evolving within such rigid rules. I think these ideas are a step forward on this path, and I can’t wait to see how this journey continues!
