Against pressure and the darkness of urban life: a review of Sasha Atlas’s EP “HOWL”

May 5, 20243 min read

Today, we’re exploring the deluxe edition of “HOWL,” Sasha Atlas‘s 2023 release, now available in three new formats! Speed it up for a faster pace, slow it down for a more laidback experience, or go drumless to emphasize the vocal compartment. But before we declare our favorite version, let’s delve into the essence of “HOWL” and learn more about its creator.

Following the success of her previous single, “NY, It Was Fun,” which garnered attention from esteemed tastemakers like Wonderland Magazine, fans and critics alike have been eagerly anticipating another taste of Atlas’ artistry. With “HOWL,” Sasha Atlas reintroduces her futuristic style, offering a powerful blend of dark pop, alternative pop, and synth-wave influences.

Inspired by her own experiences working on Wall Street during her time in NYC, “HOWL” delves into the darkest corners of urban life, exploring themes of toxic work relationships, the suffocating pressure to conform, and the inner demons that accompany ambitious pursuits. The track serves as a rallying cry for ambitious young people, especially young women, empowering them to confront obstacles with courage and determination.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of artists including AURORA, Depeche Mode, and Madonna, Atlas crafts a dramatic sonic experience that serves as a stunning introduction to her unique sound. Through her music, she hopes to give strength to others facing their own personal challenges, making them feel like the badasses they truly are.

And that’s what I really enjoyed about “HOWL”: the strengthening concept that gives us courage. This concept is further enriched in the music video, which showcases a blend of dark and red palettes in a futuristic city, with a sci-fi influence that doubles down on our previous observations about the song. It’s a beautiful music video that really helps in sending the right message with an impressive set of visuals.

Now, after this introduction, all you need to do is pick the right version of “HOWL” and enjoy! Personally, I preferred the Drumless version for a more cinematic look, but if you’re into the Slowed/Fast trend, its variants will amaze you. So pick your favorite version, press play, and let Sasha Atlas take you on a journey through the darkest corners of urban life.
