Indian Funk Manifest: A Review of Positive Reptile’s EP”Sunsetter”

January 11, 20242 min read

Today I discovered a fascinating project from Positive Reptile, called “Sunsetter EP“. It steers slightly outside our classic EDM comfort zone, and does so with remarkable finesse. We’re diving into Indian Funk today!

Sunsetter EP includes four tracks, each with a distinct personality yet sharing a crucial DNA: an effortlessly laid-back spirit. The production is beautifully intricate, maintaining a lightweight, almost meditative attitude. Unique instruments elevate the sonic landscape, inviting listeners to explore uncharted sounds.

Tablas (traditional Indian drums), sitars, and a phenomenal electric guitar form the EP’s sonic palette. That guitar – oh, that guitar – is Positive Reptile’s secret weapon. Hinting at the creator’s heavy metal roots, it injects pure energy while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding soundscape. Crafting a chilled atmosphere and then unleashing an electric guitar solo? That’s no small feat.

Creating “Sunsetter” was clearly a complex challenge. The sound design is extraordinary, especially in how the guitar and analog synths are handled. Each listen reveals carefully placed musical fragments, a delicate balance that could easily become chaotic – but instead resembles an intricate, mesmerizing arabesque.

The third track, “Santosha” is a particular revelation. Imagine a reggae drum pattern intertwining with a melancholic guitar solo, punctuated by wild, unpredictable percussion. It’s a reminder that “Sunsetter” isn’t just another ambient project. I see it more like a living, breathing musical experiment.

From a technical standpoint, this EP is mind-blowing. But here’s my advice to casual listeners: grab your headphones, close your eyes, and let 15 minutes of Positive Reptile’s ethnic Indian funk completely transport you. You’re about to get beautifully, wonderfully lost.
