TikTok’s Experiment: Mawf

April 23, 20221 min read

If you are a producer who is fascinated and quite possibly a nerd about sound design, you might be holding resentment towards the folks who made TikTok. Well, that’s going to change. The brainstormers behind the notorious platform, ByteDance, have dabbled in the audio-editing spectrum and come up with a freebie software named “Mawf”, a rather intriguing plugin that manipulates virtual instruments and boasts other quirky features.

Employing Machine Learning technology, “Mawf” can transform any input audio signal into imitating a real virtual instrument. One could use this to augment and enhance audio or experiment with it as a standalone virtual instrument. About what goes on behind the screens would be a mind-numbingly intricate deal to explain, but here’s a layman’s attempt: the ML powering this plugin tries to understand the changes in pitch and timbre and then creates an approximate tonality to mimic the sound provided by the user. Therefore, this needs only a recording of the desired instrument to do this.

For now, this plugin is can be downloaded by users residing outside the US free of cost, and the beta-testing can be availed only by the first 500 people.
