The Chainsmokers Are Back!

January 13, 20222 min read

In the back of my mind, I have always regarded that the US-based duo received far more harsh critic for “Closer, by being called out derogative terms such as sellouts and commercial by many in the EDM community a few years back. It makes me genuinely happy to see that they have reappeared with new music after a hiatus of two years. We saw them leave an active release schedule in 2019 with the good album “World War Joy”, and things have certainly changed since that.

A pandemic, sure, some marketing gimmicks (like hiring dopplegangers of them for live shows), the usual NFT bandwagon flex on social media after a break announced in 2020, the pair seems to have put in the work as their fourth album “TCS4” is on its way with a surprising single released tonight.

“High” with the Kid Laroi (notorious for the 2020 hit “Stay” with Justin Bieber) is exceptionally catchy, already giving us a hint about the Chainsmoker’s direction for 2022. The breakdown follows the emo-punk wave that artists like MGK have made trending again, which I must say, is absolutely fantastic (thanks to a grand performance from the vocalist). Then, a drop that sounds identical to Calvin Harris from 2015 comes about, yet it’s a standard take on the commercial Future House. Usually I would criticise about the overused sequence, but it does fit with the radio-friendly punk/rock vibe here.

So, I guess that the Chainsmokers will continue to adapt to Rock influences (not to forget the “pink” overtone in their recent posts, suggestive of the Punk vibes) experimented in “World War Joy”, and with such luminaries involved as collaborators, I have a distinct feeling that “TCS4” will grab the charts dominantly! For sure, we are here, ready to review it!
