While the dawn of the new era of Swedish House Mafia’s comeback has met roaringly approvals to great ends, some have found themselves disappointed with their clear departure from the sound they pioneered for the festival circuits in the last decade. Artists, who grew up to this sonic trademarks, have come forward to give homage with their own takes. While there has been a bombardment of bootlegs already, we have a rather genuine one that stood out from the bunch of others. Meet Denzell and Nick Endhem’s remix for “Moth To A Flame”, which also features RnB/pop hotshot The Weeknd. Why this one you might ask? Stick around, you won’t be left disappointed.
It was almost next to clear that the original record would be preferring the radio-friendly instrumentation, with such a hefty act involved. The song, from SHM’s upcoming album “Paradise Again”, edges forward with a sultry and airy vocals from the Canadian singer, while the Swedish trio went for a delicate and electronic pop schematics to balance out between the club and commercial aspects requisite for the production. The atmospheric breakdown called out for even aggressive reworks that would put more energy to the equation, namely progressive or electro house. What if both were in the mix? Well, here’s where the subject of this review takes the mantle. The mentioned upcomers sensed for a remix duty that would let them craft a hybrid between their signatures, resulting in something that is fondly reminiscent of 2010s dance music and peculiarly well-fitting to this otherwise slower initial version.
What we particularly appreciated here is the twist on the drop, which acquires more dynamism and aggressiveness while preserving the expected “SHM vibe”, which wasn’t an easy task for the remixers. Even if others tried to follow the same formula (such as KAAZE, with his beautiful Arena Mix), Denzell & Nick Endhem found the right spot for impressing us, with a balanced and easy-going result.
Funnily enough, we consider this version of “Moth To A Flame” to sound more “Swedish House Mafia” than the original, and that’s probably what many other fans were looking for. Don’t miss it out!
