Reviewing Squid Game Remixes!

October 13, 20213 min read

There is a new mania ravaging out there, and I suppose most of you already know that we are talking about: the new Netflix show Squid Game is an exciting exploration of the human nature and its crazy, dark and egoistic sides.

Also, no spoilers here! We are here to analyze its (underrated) soundtrack “Pink Soldiers”, which captures the eerie undertones this show carries and obviously, has already been milked to death by fervid remixers. Before any other hotshot approaches this and finishes beating the proverbial dead horse like it happened with “Bella Ciao (OST for Money Heist), so let’s talk about the three edits that particularly impressed us.

1. Hansel Remix
84/100

This pick is probably biased as Progressive House is one of my favourite genre, although I found this absolutely brilliant! The twist here makes it stand out from the rest, as Hansel crafted a melody that would function great in a standalone project. Elegant chords are present in the background and the vocal loop fits even in this solemn approach, maybe even better than in the original itself, if I must admit. The build-up lacks some of that polish during the transition, but from a bootleg standpoint, we can’t expect miracles here. By far, the best Squid Game soundtrack remix I stumbled upon.

2. Soner Karaca Remix
71/100

Since Brazilian Bass doesn’t work okay with the vocals, Soner Karaca toned it down to a lower pitch and changed most of the structure with a different rhythm like Hansel. In this situation as well, I preferred how the remixer went ahead to ingrain his personality, shifting towards a Tech House treatment for the last section! Problem, however, is that this remix sounds much like the original track with the “Pink Soldiers” vocal slapped over it. A bit forced, yet admirable job done in achieving a smooth outcome.

3. TrapManiacs Remix
62/100

Oh the good old times. Remember when producers were putting together “Festival Trap” mixes by slowing down EDM records and adding the same 808s and all that shebang? This remix goes for it, already having racked 50k streams on SoundCloud, yet it’s the most basic formula one can expect. Like a juicy McDonald’s burger for a night out, this Trap remix shines in its dull schematics when played in the right moment. The vocal loop is in its dark environment, natural as the score. No higher expectations here, as usual.
