Dave Mak & Deux – Dead To You

July 18, 20212 min read

• Wait, is it the Showtek lead? Why?
• Theme centered around the breakdown
• Meticulous work on kicks and percussions

Intensity has been in a splendid shape lately, with tons of quality releases truly exploring the niches of Big Room and Trance. I have craved to review anything from them lately, yet rarely finding any time between our packed out schedule. Last week I had to pull off the amazing “Ascension” by Skarleth & Azael (whom I promised a mention, considering its unique anti-climax drop).

For today however, I have another banger from the independent label, crafted by Dave Mak, an underrated producer who has already impressed me a few times, along with the new duo Deux. “Dead To You” delves into the unique Dirty Electro House drop that is a rarity since 2014’s Showtek productions. Drawing similarities from the former Hardstyle duo, the lead has made major appearance in certified bona fides such as “Booyah” or “We Like To Party”.

Carried by vigorous kick-drums, it still does feel a bit “wrong” to hear Showtek’s signature used by other artists, but let’s not forget that they aren’t using it for many years anyways. In this day and age, it is perfectly fine to revive it and provide some creative enrichment. And there it is.

In the due process of breaking down “Dead To You”, a fantastic message unravels for all the people who proclaim “EDM is Dead”. With a solemn chorus in the backdrop, a vocoded vocal specifies that it’s only dead to you, dear complainer. The real artists, like here, have the capabilities to resuscitate EDM, including the long forgotten styles as the Showtek one. Simply genial.

If my understanding about the message behind this release is correct, I have nothing but a round of applause for Dave Mak and Deux. This was a proficient way to send a positive assertion to all producers our there, that indeed, there is nothing wrong with bringing back the nostalgia some times!
