Evanescence – Bring Me To Life [FLYNNINHO X gotlucky F*KK UP]

April 7, 20215 min read

A classic brought back to life
Bass House arrangements with dynamic elements
Short yet effective production

We are in a point of history where nearly every electronic artist seems to be doing lazy reworks of either modern hits or yesterday’s evergreen, just to accumulate further attention (and royalty) by getting placed on digital playlists. While this notorious trend continues, a few original attempts make an appearance to restore faith on remixes done correct. Well, I have got just the creative case to talk about, as this seems like the perfect opportunity to showcase a splendid modernistic reconstruction of an evergreen from not to long ago. FLYNNINHO and gotlucky have joined their forces yet again to produce a club-ready version of Evanescence’s all-time hit “Bring Me To Life”.

Most of times when I am looking for the right candidate to talk about in the next review, it is either new aliases or established top honchos in the scene. Rarely, quite rarely, I tend to write about familiar faces in this rapid industry. FLYNNINHO is one of them, as I stumbled on his discography in the end of 2019, and mentioned him a year ago for an octane-fueled “Wanna Rock N’ Roll” EP. The uprising figure impressed me with his musical catalogue to the point that I decided to nominate him as “Artist of the year” in 2020. On the other hand, Russian upcomer gotlucky has a solid track record already, having official releases in esteemed imprints as Metanoia and Playbox Music. Both mentioned parties specialize on Bass House, and coincidentally, this is not their first team-up either. Almost eight months ago, they gave their spin on “Ain’t Deep Enough” from American duo Autograf during a remix contest. The result is a bombastic take on the electronic-pop original, amalgamation of two distinct styles that brought out its own flair and charisma with a robust pace.

To describe this rework in a jiffy would be unfair, but here goes: imagine a STMPD-like dynamic blueprint (minus the cliched sample loops from 789Ten artist packs, hah!) meshing in with the iconic Hard/Gothic Rock sound from the memorable classic. Mind you, it takes a lot of creative boldness to pursue this endeavor, considering how outstanding the actual song is till date. It was a quintessential track for many adolescents growing up in the noughties, who savored the then peak of post-punk/Emo Rock. Last thing you would do as an artist is to sour audience’s nostalgia, hence the remixers had to tread carefully.

Fortunately, and to much surprise, this rework doesn’t rely solely on the prevailing version. They drew up an adept plan: starting with the immediately recognizable and famous vocals, along with the haunting pianoforte lingering over it as a simple Reece bassline powers the low-end: perfect! A strong dose of adrenaline hits as the drop kicks in, utilizing FX shots (standard in this style) placed within a structure of four by four House rhythm, switching between itself and edited snippets from the vox in earlier breakdown. It doesn’t overdo this, yet not underwhelm while at this effort. The attention to details in this project is superb to say the least, starting from the sound-selection to miniscule yet mightily significant like BPM for the instrumental!

Even if I am at a point where Bass House hasn’t been my main interest for a while, this remix has entertained me thoroughly. FLYNNINHO and gotlucky meticulously demonstrated their skill-set by redoing this evergreen, and another follow-up sequel to this would be fantastic. Get your usual cup of caffeine-charged coffee and start the day with this vigorous energizer!
