As many readers know, my standpoint and views about the festival-friendly genre of Big Room was always fixed, a “love or hate” relationship. My latest reviews didn’t urge me to give it a score higher than 65 points… until now. Opinions are bound to change if I witness excellence in certain track, and so it did with the newest original from the Dutch prodigy Declain. “Dance in ‘84” is an incredible time-warp to the 80s Discotheques, but with the necessary modern adjustments added.
The mentioned era has always fascinated me obviously, as it birthed the modern electronic dance music we hear. Firstly, this tune begins with an easily recognizable melody, inspired hugely from the decade, further enhanced with the vocals which traces essence of synthpop.
Having an admirable synergy between the present and the past, the drop houses a hooking riff and is a far cry from the repetitive mentality. It balances between a pumping anthem song to something that can be heard with a laid-back mood. And how would it be complete without the majestic guitar takeover? Declain made sure to add a solo-guitar performance in midst of the drop, fulfilling the requisite. The duration of two and a half minutes only pushed me to repeat it more, and perhaps could have been extended.
Declain abides and honors the golden time period with a brilliant hybrid of retrowave, Hi-NRG/Synthpop, and Electro House in a meticulously made number. “Dance In ’84” may have went under your radar, but make no mistake, it is the music you have looked for in a long time!
